I went to see Kate in "High School Musical" yesterday afternoon. She was, as one would expect, wonderful in the show. She had top billing in the program, and was head and shoulders above the rest of the company. I had the feeling that she was toning down her performance so it wouldn't be so obvious that she was the real talent in the show.
We chatted after the show briefly, since she had a press event to run off to, but I am going back so we can have a chance to spend longer than 3 minutes together. Kate is a real sweetheart, a genuinely nice person and great hugger.
We had scheduled a lunch and theatre date in NYC back in April, but she got my message about where and when to meet too late to for us to connect. Obviously, MySpace messages take a while to get to the recipient -- too long, if you ask me! " alt="sad01.gif" border="0" />
If you are in the Boston area through the 29th, go to see the show. The show is a bowl of fluff, but, Kate is worth the trip!

Thanks, zeus. Great to hear that someone from the boards got to see Kate's performance. Various reviews I've seen on the NSMT.org site praise her comedic talents, as evidenced in the following excerpts from four sources --
"Doing a fine job as comic villainess Sharpay is Kate RockwellRockwell looks sensational and forms a dynamic comedy team with the clever Andrew Keenan-Bolger as her brother and partner in crime. The two deliver a hilariously sassy audition number."
"the supporting cast includes an over-the-top performance by Kate Rockwell as Sharpay, the popular, leggy blonde who has her sights set on the lead in the school musical - and she'll step on anyone in her way with her hot pink suede platform boots. She's a pumped-up version of the Elle Woods character played by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde.'' Sharpay's favorite accessory is twin brother Ryan, younger by eight minutes, who clumsily follows on her heels. Their chemistry and brand of physical comedy is much like Jack and Karen on Will and Grace'' - well-delivered zingers and animated expressions and body language."
"Playing the scene stealing spoiled Evans twins, Sharpay and Ryan are Kate Rockwell and Andrew Keenan-Bolger. Dressed in bright pink Kateshows off her comedic talents as this bitchy girl who will do anything to get what she wants because she has always played the lead in every musical with her brother since they were in kindergartenKate and Andrew's antics are wonderful to behold and they show off their voices in a rock version of the ballad "What I've Been Looking For" and also in "Bop to the Top" with the Brains and Jocks."
"Sharpay, a jealous, stereotypical dumb blonde, played by the terrific Kate Rockwell, had a Reese Witherspoon/Paris Hilton personality plus a great voice. "
Given all this praise, isn't it ironic that G:YTOTIW producers saddled Kate with the "Serious Sandy" moniker?
And what next for Kate after she finishes HSM on July 29? A national tour? Her Broadway debut? We Kate fans are confident that her future is full of possibility.
I'm not surprised that she did a great job and I'm glad to hear that she got top billing. Sharpay is definitely the best part in the show and I'm sure Kate did it justice. I love hearing that the contestants from Grease are doing well. I'm really dying to hear more about the other contestants.
Zeus55-weren't you a huge Allie fan? I really grew to love her and I'm hoping we hear news of something big for her soon. Have you heard anything?
More praise for Kate's talents in Broadway World on July 13....
Comic shtick is provided by the viperous Rockwell as Sharpay and the too cool for school Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Ryan, her younger brother by six minutes.
