The tone has been occasionally tense here lately. Maybe we can ease that with a bit of fun, and in this case certainly, everyone's opinion is valid!
Alphabetically speaking, what are the best-ever musicals?
Peter Filichia of TheatreMania says: Annie; Bye Bye Birdie; Carousel (sorry about that, Chorus Line); Dreamgirls; Evita; Fiddler on the Roof; Gypsy; Hello, Dolly; Into the Woods; Jesus Christ Superstar; King and I; Les Miserables; My Fair Lady; Nine; Oklahoma; Phantom of the Opera; Quilters (that was easy!); Ragtime
And now we come to the toughest race. As youve probably noticed, for whatever reason, most titles of musicals, plays, books, movies, or TV shows begin with the letter S. At the risk of offending Show Boat, South Pacific, Sound of Music, Sunday in the Park with George and Sweeney Todd, Ill go with 1776.
Finishing up, theres Two Gentlemen of Verona; Urinetown; Very Good, Eddie; West Side Story; Xanadu; Youre a Good Man, Charlie Brown; and Zorba.
You, of course, are welcome to agree, disagree or submit your own list...either here or to pfilichia@aol.com
Some shows not mentioned are "Mame", "Joseph and His Dreamcoat", "The Producers", "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", "Little Shop of Horrors", "Oliver"...and uh...oh, yes, "Grease".
Remember, Ray, this is a "best-ever" designation with just one possibility for each letter of the alphabet.
So would you choose Forum over Fiddler? Joseph over JC Superstar? Little Shop over Les Miz? Mame over My Fair Lady? Oliver over Oklahoma? Producers over Phantom?
Even among the opinions of those posting on this MB which is full of Grease fans, Gypsy sets a high standard, I think.
Also remember, everyone, this is meant only as a fun way to share opinions, not as a means of establishing the ultimate evaluation of Broadway musicals.
On Saturday I'll be seeing a production of "Nine." Does it actually merit a best-ever ranking...or aren't there any other musicals that begin with "N"?
