I thought it might be interesting to many of you to get a glimpse into what was happening in Laura's life one year ago. She was playing the part of Peter Pan in our local Eagan Summer Theatre--complete with flying adventures from a company called ZFX that is the same professional flying crew that flew Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan. Laura choreographed this show as well as played Peter--an endeavor she'd probably never repeat--not that she didn't enjoy both aspects but doing both at the same time was extremely demanding and very tiring. I wish you all could have seen her as Peter Pan. It may be hard to imagine that someone as feminine as Laura could play a mischievous boy who won't grow up but it was just phenomenal. The people from ZFX became avid Laura fans and I have heard since that they all heard about and watched the "Grease" show on TV--calling in magnanimously to vote for her. If the opportunity would ever arise for Laura to audition for this part on Broadway I would hope she would consider it. It is an extremely physically exhausting role (in Laura's words, "My gosh, being a boy is so exhausting! All that jumping around--never sitting still, running from one side of the stage to the other... I would never want to be a boy!") but what a treat to the eyes to watch her. A magnificent production from this biased mother's eyes. Anyway, at the end of July last year was when she also auditioned for "Grease" at our local Chanhassen Dinner theatre. And one day when she most needed a pick-me-up, they called right before she left for an evening show of Peter Pan to tell her they wanted her to play Sandy. Laura was so relieved and was as pleased as she could be! Earlier that spring Laura had taken on the internal debate of whether or not to return to college after her year of being a performing apprentice at the Children's Theatre Company. She had enjoyed college for her one year she'd gone, but in some ways had had so many spectacular performing opportunities growing up in Minneapolis that it felt like a partial step backwards and somewhat of a delay to her ultimate dreams. So she decided to just go for the dreams and keep auditioning and not return to college at least for now. So when Peter Pan was going to be over she was experiencing what actors experience all the time--the fact that she was going to need another job! The Chanhassen "Grease" production would run for several months and she'd get paid and have benefits! That was spectacular news! She had also been dating Nathan for 6-7 months and if she didn't know yet for sure if he was "the one," I KNEW! I actually don't believe it happens very often in life, but Laura's dad and I both felt instant connection to Nathan the day we met him. He was everything we'd been praying for for years--a man I think God designed for Laura. So that's how our lives looked a year ago. We got no hint about the Grease TV show or auditions for it until a little later into the fall.
Hello Jane :) My, what a difference a year can make! I'm kicking myself for not going to see "Peter Pan" last summer, I would have loved to have seen our future Broadway star!!! I'm sure she was wonderful, I've seen pictures of her as Peter, and I'm sure she was very convincing! I have to tell you that I just love your posts, I love any tidbits you can throw our way regarding Laura and how she is, what she is up to, etc. Oh yes, I believe Nathan is the perfect one for Laura----they just seem to "fit". I was lucky enough to see some of their wedding pictures when Nathan's mom was at the Mall Of America back in May for the autograph signing, and they are just a beautiful couple! I just know he is so proud of her!! How is he liking New York? I'm sure it's an adjustment :) All I know is, I CANNOT wait until September when I get to see this wonderful show-----I know right now that it is going to be such a treat!!!!! I was in Australia the night the show had it's first preview, and all I could think of was Laura and Max, and prayed that everything was going good. Please tell Laura that Minnesota wishes her nothing but the best, and that she is thought of every day!!! Take care Jane! Dana in West St Paul
If you go to youtube.com and search for Laura Osnes Peter Pan, there are about eight clips of her in the role. No wonder she was exhausted. I didn't realize she choreographed it as well--now I'm even more impressed !!
Thanks for the wonderful post. I enjoyed it throughly. Over on Max's website someone gave me a link for a blog they started for Laura and they had some clips of her as Peter Pan. She was wonderful! I think it would be awesome if she got to play it on Broadway! I think that it is a role that is perfect for her. Her voice was clear and strong and beautiful and she seemed like she loved it. So happy and care free! Thanks again Jane! I pray that all goes well for Laura and Nathan in their marriage! I'm glad you posted today for us to read!
Thanks for posting, Jane. That's a remarkable odyssey in a year's time.
I also enjoyed reading Laura's response to Playbill's questionaire online yesterday. Though she didn't reference her experience in Peter Pan, I had to smile at her accounting of her worst flubbed line as Dorothy and worst costume in Mr. Popper's Penguins. And who would have guessed that Laura's a killer ping pong player and an X-box fan?!
Thanks so much Jane! Its funny you should put a topic like this up. Just the other day I was thinking how much could can in a year. I was trying to remember where I was and what I was doing a year ago. Its amazing what could happen. I'm excited to see what will have changed by next year at this time. A year ago today I never knew who Laura Osnes was, now Im definitely a big fan. I would have never thought I'd be going to NYC just to see the new production of Grease cast from a TV reality show (I hate reality TV), but here I am.
Jane, thanks so much for the "before" snapshot to combine with the "after" that we have experienced vicariously. I've been thinking about the fact that Nathan uprooted his life to move to NY and am wondering what career plans he is working on there.
So many of us are happy for what's happened to your daughter. Also, my thought's and prayers are with those people whose loved ones died in the Minnesota bridge tragedy.

You test my exact memory but Laura originally auditioned in L.A. in November, then Grease Academy was 2-3 weeks later in early December for about 5 days. She was back home for another month--then left for L.A. around Jan. 12.
