hey, has anyone had the understudies go on for any of the parts? when i went on the 31st i had the full leading and supporting cast. i'm just wondering how the understudies are. of course they will be talented, i'm just wondering how they did.
I must admit this is something that always concerns me this early on. If one of the key actors really gets sick and is unable to perform a show, could the understudy step in yet? I also doubt they've had formal understudy rehearsals yet, but if I were one of those understudies, I'd sure make sure I was as ready as I could be--in case of sudden need. It CAN happen.
A few years ago, I was at an early preview of the revival of La Cage aux Folles, starring Gary Beach (The Producers) and Daniel Davis (Niles on "The Nanny.") Midway though the first act, Davis stopped the show, explaining how he had lost his voice and couldn't continue. Being that they had only played a good 5 performances before, there were no formal understudy rehearsals. Yet, with 15 minutes just to learn and brush up on the choreography, the understudy went on and was fantastic. You'd never know that he wasn't the lead.
I think it's easier in a show like Grease, since everyone and their brother is familiar with it. Even if they're not sure of the exact choreography, they still can sing the songs and fake it well!
