The cast of Grease will be performing at the Broadway on Broadway concert on Sunday, September 16. The annual free concert begins at 11:30 AM in the heart of Manhattan, on a stage set up right in the middle of Times Square. If you want to get a spot, you must get there early, as the event fills up very fast. It's like New Year's Eve, only Broadway related and not freezing cold. Nearly every musical on Broadway will be represented to welcome the new season.
No word on their song choice...I can only assume it'll be Summer Nights.
Safe assumption: the company and crew will have a table at Broadway Cares/Equity Fight's Aids annual Flea Market on 44th and 45th Streets on September 23. The entire Broadway community gets together to sell everything they have - posters, Playbills, props, costumes, theater displays, scripts, set pieces, baked goods, etc.
Another safe assumption: given that Grease is partially owned by NBC, one would think they'll be performing on the national telecast of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...
If I dont read these posts, I never know what is going on. I am going to NY now that weekend to see the concert. We should all go and meet at the concert. Road Trip.
"Avenue Q, Chicago, A Chorus Line, The Color Purple, Curtains, The Drowsy Chaperone, Grease, Hairspray, Jersey Boys, Legally Blonde: The Musical, Les Misérables, The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Mary Poppins, Monty Pythons Spamalot, The Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Spring Awakening, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Wicked."

That is the best quote of the week...Road Trip....I completely agree, I would love to see all the shows represented and of course Grease. This next issue is totally irrelevant but I have HBO on now (east coast) and Grease 2 is on (of course I had to stop and watch the wreckage). What a bad movie but it just reminds me that the whole point to Grease is Americana....nostalgia...young love...its not brain surgery......ITs FUN!!!!! I will remain a fan and recommend this show to anyone that will listen because....ITS A GREAT TIME!!
Oh, one more thing I forgot to ask. Does anyone know anything about Cheap Tickets? My friends said they got in line in the Times Square location and ended up with 30 dollar tickets to Hairspray and Legally Blonde but its like a three hour window before show time. Do they sell Grease tickets there yet? Any solid facts on that Mr. E or anyone? I will see Grease again, I do have a great way to get to NY (all I can say publically is Southwest Airlines Rocks) and we have family who live in Brooklyn. I would love to see the Broadway on Broadway concert and am thinking that maybe if I did Cheap Tickets, it would be much more cost effective.
Many of you have been wondering about the TKTS booth (http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56) , which sells half price tickets to many Broadway shows...it is unlikely you'll come across any Grease tickets at the booth at this point in the year, as the show seems to be selling well above capacity as it is...SRO is probably the way to go...but I imagine eventually there will be tickets available through the booth. Some of the super popular shows like Wicked and Jersey Boys are never available, but other popular ones like Hairspray and some "oldies" like Chicago and Rent are almost always available. Even Spring Awakening has been available despite the post-Tony's bump in sales. Keep an eye out.

I'm down for a road trip. Or in my case - a train trip!
And, for the record, my brother just took my sister to see Legally Blonde last weekend and he got them orchestra seats through TKTS. It's a great program though the last time I did it I had to get up at six am to get there. I was tired. lol

What I wouldn't give to get to NY for this event. I'm a mom with kids at home, however, and they want to see Grease, too, so I'll wait until everyone can travel. It'll be fun to hear the stories.

Sigh. I would love to take the kids. If not for school, work, soccer, and an 11 hour drive, we would SO be there. Actually my son and I could go, but that is a long way to go alone. Anyone passing through Ohio on their way?
Anyone know a pilot with a private jet who can pick up Rachel Crumm in Phoenix, then fly to get me in Minneapolis, then stop in Ohio, then....! Ha! That would be the way to go!
Perhaps they could start in Seattle and....Grannygreaser, how long would it take you to be ready if the plane stops in Nevada?

30 minutes!
Ah, if only I'd known! I could have gone back to NYC after my Philly trip and sponged off friends for another two weeks! Ha! I am pushing it as it is...

I never ventured out of the suburbs and into the streets of Manhattan before Grease but I am so tempted to go to this...where else could you get such great entertainment for ...nothing. But do they actually set the stage up in the middle of the street? and put grandstands up. Or do you take a beach chair? And just how early should you get there if you want to sit in the first few rows?
I will be there for the 16th and the 23rd. Come on Eris, I am counting on you coming to town. It will be fun to meet anyone who can come. I was wondering the same about logistics. It is going to be crazy so I am going to hopefully sit by the stage.
Okay, you talked me into it. I'll tell my boss that I can't work on the 23rd so I can rest before taking a cross country flight. I'll be there on the 16th and the 23rd. We'll work out the logistics later.
I wonder if my brother has some chairs or something we can borrow for the concert.

FYI - the 23rd is just the flea market. I cannot personally guarantee that Grease will be there, but chances are, as the rest of the Broadway community is, they will at least have a table.
The stage is literally set up in the middle of Times Square...right on 42nd Street, across from where Good Morning America tapes.
The following are all photos I've taken (in case anyone was wondering about copyrights).
Logistically speaking, the gigantic red box symbolizes where the stage would be, from 46th Street where I took the photo last spring.
Here are a few photos from previous Broadway on Broadway concerts. I generally stand by Toys R Us. The view is perfect from right over there.
In past years, if you got there early enough (6, 7, 8 AM), you'd be able to sit/stand in the area under the stage. This year, they're doing some "dress as your favorite Broadway character" thing and the first 100 costumed people get to be in that area. It's standing room only , no chairs allowed, as the crowds are a good 20 people wide.
And now, a photo I didn't take. This was found on Google, taken from the stage:
Wow what great photos. Funny we went shopping at that Toys r Us waiting to go to Grease. So...who should I get dressed up as seeing as I am getting spoiled wanting good seats and all.

I asked on the TripAdvisor forum, and Broadway Girl (of Princeton NJ) kindly provided the following info:
yes they put up a stage in the middle of Times Square. There are no grandstands available to the general public for seating unless you are VIP aka in a show, know someone in a show, producer of a show, etc. There are no beach chairs allowed in the crowd. Everyone stands...yes, that's right...stands.
If you want to get close to the stage, you need to get there VERY early. People start getting there as early as 6am. A friend got there 2 hrs before it started last yr and was about 2 or 3 blocks away from the stage. It gets very hot in the crowd...bring water.
Check out the pics on the broadway on broadway website and check out the size of the crowd this draws.
Eventually the cops close off the Times Square area (I believe after the concert starts) and reroute foot traffic. Last year in order to meet a friend at her hotel on 46th btwn 6 and 7th, i had to go down 42nd, up 6th avenue, and then left on 46th. AFter it's over, the let people out of the area but not back in until a majority of the crowd has left the area. It's a rough morning to try to cross Times Square.
Ug, I hoping my spondylolysis isn't acting up that day. If it is I may start to whine after all of that standing. But hopefully I'll be having so much fun I won't even notice it.

I get there at 9 Am and have my great spot by Toys R Us.
As I said earlier, you cannot get upclose and personal to the stage anymore.
To clarify - the grandstands are even stricter than family and friends. Usually available only for dignitaries and other NY/Broadway high-ups who want to show their faces at a public event. Same as the Thanksgiving Day Parade grandstands.

Actually if the plane stops on Ohio, it can pick up Renie too. I think she lives only like 30 minutes from us.

My senior year in high school I dressed up as Eris for Halloween. I was just thinking that it's too bad I don't have that costume anymore because it could totally be changed into a muse costume for Xanadu. I do, however, still have the wreath I wore in my hair.
I, also, have a Pink Ladies teeshirt but I doubt they'd call that a "costume".

Road trip? I want to come! Can you get the jet to stop by San Francisco too? I wish I still lived in NY there's so many good shows I'd like to see right now, including Grease of course! Max and Laura are on Nick again right now on the West Coast.
Since there are so many knowledgeable Broadway folks on this board, I was wondering if anyone has heard of a summer children's camp in NY called Stagedoor Manor. If so please let me know what you've heard. I have a daughter that has her eye on it for next summer. She's a budding thespian and begging me to send her there.

When I was in college one of my friends used to call me a "fountain of useless information". And you should hear me talk about baseball too.

I live in Springfield Ohio. I'd love to be there and meet you all but I work a crazy retail schedule and right now we are down to three people in our department. I'm only getting my schedule a week at a time right now. It would be a blast. I'll let you know. That would have to be one fantastically generous pilot to start at one end of the country and work his way to NY but who knows it could happen! The unexpected happens every day. When I retire in February I plan to start putting money aside for a quick trip to NY to see Grease. Till then I'll just continue to talk to the nicest people on a forum anywhere! You all rock!
Darn! Actually I am off that Sunday but I've already made plans for a much needed vacation which will take me to another part of the state. Oh well. It'll happen. I just don't know when.
My son would love to hear you. He is our baseball encyclopedia. He can tell you about every World Series that the Yankees or Reds played in from who pitched to how many games were played. I wish we knew about that baseball exhibit. He would have loved it. Darn. That is another reason to go back this fall. We'll be looking for that private plane to stop by.
For some strange reason my boss has already made the schedule for the week of the 16th. She never makes it that early and she put me on 11-6:45 but I'm going to get someone to cover for me. One of my co-workers owes me a favor.

High-five! :) Barring me sleeping through my alarm, I may be making my way over there as well. Might have enough people for a mini-Grease gathering eh? (assuming we could find each other in a crowd that big!)
