the ny1 review of the show actually lambasted kathleen marshall last week but was relatively kind to max and laura. relatively. curious to hear the interview in light of that.
i think many of the reviewers have made a scapegoat of kathleen. not that i'd have wanted max and laura to have been fed to the lions, but....
Dana - As a frequent theatergoer, I do feel the problem was mostly in Kathleen Marshall's production. You have to remember that Marshall was the person who breathed new lives into old, dated chestnuts like The Pajama Game, Wonderful Town, and Two Gentlemen of Verona: the musical. Her two Tony Awards came from choreographing PJ and WT.
I personally expected a lot more, and I think most of the critics did, too. As for Max and Laura, they got the reviews they deserved, mostly. They're new to the Broadway scene and they were judged the same as any performer making their Broadway debut. They got relatively good reviews in a show that has terribly one-dimensional characters and is full of plot-holes.
The interview did not mention any of the reviews (chances are the segment was filmed before the show opened). It was the generic kind of "well what were you planning to do if the people you didn't want were chosen?" "how do you feel about the poor ratings of the TV show?" etc.
Marshall answered the questions with ease and grace, even if some of it came off as bullsh*tty. But everyone BS'es in interviews.
I think she did a pretty good job considering she was dealing with Grease. I can agree with the criticisms about the sets looking cheap and inadequate but really not much more. I have seen the Grease movie countless times. I would have been bored if the play was done the same. And I guess I am too old to appreciate vulgar, edgy humor. Since I am not into dance the dancing seemed fine to me...after the improvement from the previews to the opening. About the only direction I thought could have been bettter...well I am sure I am in the tiny minority here but I thought Rizzo, while probably true to what a kid would do, was just too harsh and unlikeable. The actress was very, very good, but the character had no soft underbelly like the Rizzo in the movie. Which to me was her reedeming value.
