Carols for a Cure vol 9
Permalink Closed

CD arrived in the mail today and I haven't listened to the whole thing yet but I have really enjoyed what I have heard.

The Grease cast does a traditional-sounding cover of Jolly Old St. Nicholas followed by a rousing Grease-ified version of Up On a House Top. Laura's voice can easily be heard above all of the women while Max blends in with the men and is not as easily discernable but can be picked out at times - especially during Jolly Old St. Nicholas . Up On a Housetop is one of my favorite Christmas songs and I really enjoyed this version. At the end the cast shouts "Happy Grease-mas!" followed by laughter and at that point I was able to pick out Max's voice.

Not the whole cast is featured and since I left the booklet upstairs I'll post the names when I get home from work.

Also, in the Alter Boyz song The Innkeeper's Lament Chad is one of the featured singings. Ashley Spencer, on the other hand, is not part of the Hairspray recording.

Broadway Cares is the only place you can get the CDs. When I ordered this CD I also ordered some other stuff. They have a lot of nice merchandise and much of it with the Grease logo (along with the logos of other Broadway shows). The Grease logo does not appear on this year's snow glob but that's probably because the snow globe was made before Grease opened. The Pirate Queen logo is on the snow globe and that closed well before Grease opened. Grease will probably be on next year's snow globe

Jane and Everyone Else Wondering -

For about 4-6 weeks every year, all the Broadway shows that are currently open get together and raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Then they all participate in the annual get-together, the Gypsy of the Year Competition.

Following each performance, the cast makes a plea to the audience to donate money to the great cause, which not only goes to help AIDS research, but also to the Susan Koman Breast Cancer organization, and, most recently, to Hurricane Katrina relief funds.

In exchange for a dollar, you are able to pick up a red AIDS ribbon. They also sell other items - signed Playbills, posters, (with prices ranging from $20 to $100), cookbooks, photos with actors, and, on the occasion that one of the actors wants to lead a backstage tour or sell a prop or two, an impromptu auction is held.

They also sell the Carols for a Cure CD - for $20.

The shows which raise the most money with the Gypsy of the Year competition, which falls on December 3rd and 4th of this year.

The Carols CD is not sold in general music stores. You can try Amazon or Barnes and Noble, but it's unlikely they'll have it. If you're seeing any show that ISN'T in previews, it's very likely that you'll be able to buy the CD. If you can't get into a show, any of the Broadway stores (Theater Circle, Broadway NY, Colony Records) are sure to have it. And, of course, the BCEFA website.

Thank Eris,

I just went to Broadwaycare.org and ordered the CD. I want anything that Has Laura and Max or the Grease Cast! I could not find it immediately but put a search for Carols for a Cure and it brought the webpage up.

I have my TIVO ready to record Laura and Max and CGrease Cast on Good Morning America for 10/29.

Truly love this Grease RydelL High forum and enjoy everyone's comments. biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Haha, Up on the Housetop is definitely Grease-ified - even snuck a tiny bit from Greased Lightnin' into it!

Tracy Turnblad's rap is cute. Didn't see Ashley Spencer as one of the singers for Hairspray - but with Chad recording with the Altar Boyz, who would've expected 3 YTOTIW castmates on one album?

I've had the CD for several days and haven't even heard it all the way through, but I have to say the Grease cast did a superb job. Laura's voice is discernable throughout, and I think I hear Max's tenor, at times. The CD has many other highlights, but I'll have to comment again when I've managed to listen to things more than once.

Thanks for the info on getting the CD. I just ordered one. I may pick up more copies on my November visit to see the show if they have some at the theatre. Lots of friends would enjoy a copy, no doubt, and it raises money for a good cause too.
