Laura and Max to appear at the Chatterbox, Nov. 15
Permalink Closed

Laura and Max will be interviewed at Seth's Broadway Chatterbox, November 15 at 6 PM.

The weekly talk show, located at renowned cabaret Don't Tell Mama (West 46th, between 8th and 9th), is free, with a $10 donation for admittance and a 2-drink minimum. The donation goes to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

The Chatterbox is hosted by Seth Rudetsky, Broadway's ultimate Man in Chair (for those who've seen Drowsy Chaperone, you'll get the reference), and always promises to be a hilarious evening of Broadway factoids, showtunes, and booze. Rudetsky, currently appearing in The Ritz, is one of Broadway's preeminent musical directors and knows pretty much everything about musical theater. He also worked on the 1994 revival of Grease, so that show, among many others, is in his repertoire. No doubt Laura and Max will be invited to sing.

I will certainly see what I can do

After Andy's birthday I've had more than one request for autographed Grease CDs.  Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can grant the Christmas wish of the six year old daughter of one of the users of the NBC Grease board.

Also, it can be heard on BroadwayWorld Radio, if you can figure out how to make it work.....

Oh boy...I just got home!

Because I am at the whim of train schedules I got to the city a little earlier than I'd wanted to. But if I'd taken a later train I'd have cut it a little closer than I would have liked. The Chatterbox is held in the back room of Don't Tell Mama's on W 46th Street. The room wasn't open yet when I arrived so I just sat at the bar with a drink and chatted with other early birds.

I was sitting right by the door when I felt a blast of cold air as the door opened. I glanced over and I saw a very familiar couple walking in. Yup, it was Nate and Laura. Laura spotted me first and I could see the recognition set in this time and then Nate spotted me and they came right over. We chatted about this and that. We talked a bit about Seth and the Chatterbox and I mentioned how I wanted to come when Austin and Derek appeared back in May but couldn't because of a trip I was taking. Nate said that he remembered by being a big Derek supporter in LA (understatement of the year there) and that's when I mentioned that I was just in Florida to see Derek's show. They asked me how it was and then I raved about it (of course).

Then they had to go and a young woman who was sitting neat me at the bar asked if I'd really been to Florida to see Tale of Two Cities. Turns out she was a huge Max fan and we chatted until it was time to head into the back room. Since we'd both come alone I ended up inviting her to sit with me and we talked until the show started.

Now the whole time I was talking to her I was looking around for Max. Since I'd already seen Nate and Laura I figured Max couldn't be far behind. But he wasn't. Even after we were let into the back room I hadn't seen him. I saw Laura and Nate come into the back room and sit down in the back. I was actually right in front of the stage which was pretty cool. The lights dimmed and Seth came out and I still hadn't seen Max. Then he introduced just Laura and I really started to get worried. Seth interviewed Laura about her performing past and how she got into singing and dancing. Then he asked her to walk us through the show starting with her audition. She'd just gotten up to Grease Academy when some random guy crawled past my table and set his umbrella on the stage before crawling on stage. He had his back to me and I was all "Who is this guy just running up on stage?" But then he turned around and I saw that it was Max. He was okay! Phew! A half an hour late but alive. They had to stop the interview so that Seth could get Max a stool to sit on. So there was a little bit of standing around. Max looked at me and I said "I'm telling your mother!" which got a laugh out of him. Laura said that Max had finally gone to get contacts. Good for him!

So now Max and Laura were finally on stage and were both sharing their stories on the show and living in NYC. They were both very funny and Seth could not hide his disdain for the way G: YTOTIW was produced. He didn't do it in a mean way but it was pretty funny. Made some comments about how "appropriate" Ease on Down the Road was for Austin to sing (ie not at all). The "showgirlish" comment reared it's head which made me laugh because that one comment seems to have taken on a life of its own.

Max did not come prepared with a song bur Laura did.  But even though Max wasn't prepared they sang "You're the One That I Want" before Laura sang "Hopelessly Devoted".

After the show Laura and Max came down off stage and walked right past my table. They both seemed to be in a bit of a hurry so I didn't get to talk with them. No pictures - sorry. I was able to tell Max that Marjory is SUPER sick and a message from him make her day. I did get them both to sign the CD for the daughter of one of the posters from the NBC board. I cannot remember her screen name for the life of me but she's the one who helped me organize the fundraiser for Meghan Spencer. All of the money for the plane ticket went to me and all of the "spending money" went to her and then she sent Meghan a certified check. Ug, I wish I could remember her screen name from NBC. Red something. Red Baron?

I talked to Marjory on the phone while on the train home. I'd promised to call her after I saw Max and she's decided that Max and I need to become BFF. You don't think she has some ulterior motive, do you? Also, Marjory has decided that Max "owes" me because I missed Helen Slater's second appearance on Smallville because I went to the Chatterbox. How do you guys think I should be repaid?

Eris, I think it is great that you and some of the other senior members are so close Max and Laura. Is this because you are located close to NYC? I am envious that you have this repoire with them, but as I have stated before, I get star struck very easily. The only thing Max would remember about me is that I wouldn't stop taking pictures of him (I stayed until he and Laura drove away)!!

I do find myself wanting more of Grease as my trip was over a month ago. I love reading the posts, I love listening to the CD and I find myself watching numerous video posts of Grease performances. Did I just admit that I may be an addict???

I would love to see it again, but hubby doesn't; he says he doesn't want to spoil a good thing. I hope I can get the oppurtunity to go again!!

To be honest there are other Greasers that I'm "closer" to than Max and Laura.  I've only met Laura a handful of times - I've actually spoken to Nate more lol.

Also, I don't get star struck nor act star struck around them.  I don't treat them as if they're on a pedestel and I talk to them just like I would anyone else.  I have a good amount of experience with meeting celebs so I'm not easily phased by it.  Though, I have to admit, I did get a little teary the first time I met Mike Schmidt.  Though that did have more to do with my late father than Michael Jack himself.

Eris,
I'm very envious. You really met Mike Schmidt? Wow! Being from Philly, he's my all time favorite baseball hero. I still remember the 1980 World Series. Like you, I'm seldom in awe of celebrities but if I met Mike Schmidt I probably would be at least tongue-tied.
By the way, too bad you couldn't get pictures at the Chatterbox.

Your memories of the 1980 World Series are probably much clearer than mine since I was only one at the time.  Both of my parents are from Philly and actually met at the Tavern in Bala Cynwood.  I've been a Phillies fan all of my life and Schimdt is one of my heroes as well.  Some of my earliest memories is sitting on my dad's lap watching Phillies games or sitting at Veterans Stadium with my dad saying "Schmidt, hit it to Kristin!"

I've actually met him twice.  The first time was a bit of a surprise.  It was 2002 before the Vet was torn down.  They were having a home run hitting contest before the game and Schmidt was taking part.  That afternoon I was hanging out at the players' parking lot and he decided to park there.  He walked right by us and started signing autographs.

I've actually met every Phillie from 1998-2006.  I didn't get to many games this year so I didn't get to meet a lot of the new guys.

Seth's column

I gotta quote this. Cute story about Laura and Nate.

Laura grew up in the Midwest and worked as an understudy in Aladdin, which was playing at the Minneapolis Children's Theater. She and the other understudy went on for the first time when Aladdin and Jasmine had a scene where they're supposed to back into each other and they wound up completely colliding. The two leads had to be taken to the hospital (they really got injured including the Aladdin completely chipping his tooth) and Laura was so excited to go on because it was a two-show day and then was outraged when the leads wound up going on that night! How dare they be so professional? But the sparks between the two understudies flewand now they're married!
