Taking 8 year-old daughter and 11 year-old niece to NYC for a long weekend. Have lots of plans, and trying to decide between Grease and MamaMia. I know this is the Grease Forum, but I'm hoping some of you Broadway regulars can give me some direction! And where, oh where, would you take two girls for a fun, not-too-fancy dinner prior to the show? Thanks all!
When I took my sister to see Grease we went to Ellen's Stardust DIner after the show. It's set up like a 50's diner so it's a great follow up for Grease and the waitstaff sings which thrilled my sister. It's right next to the Winter Garden where Mamma Mia plays.
As for Grease vs Mamma Mia I don't know what to tell you. I enjoyed both shows. I'd say Grease because their run is probably not going to last much longer after Max and Laura's contracts are up in July. Mamma Mia will be running for quite some time.

I've been there twice and both times I've just walked in. But I've gone on week days. I've never been there on a weekend. I don't even know if they offer reservations - I don't see anything on the site.

For sure see Grease. For kids, I also recommend "The Little Mermaid" and "Mary Poppins". Plenet Hollywood is in Times Square (huge 2 story sign). I would also recommend "Legally Blonde". Get your tickets at TKTS at the Marriott Marquis hotel. They are 1/2 pric and you can get decent seqts; get there early for the best selection.
Have a great time. Be sure to get autogarphs after the show at the stage door.

Planet Hollywood is a good suggestion too but they're in most major cities which was why I recommended Ellen's instead. You could have a 50's theme for the day.
TKTS is a good suggestion but if you want to have your tickets before you get there you should check out Broadway Box. I got seats in row A through them for Grease a few months ago.

Between Grease and Mamma Mia for 8 & 11 year olds, I would most definitley go with Grease. I think Mamma Mia will be around for a while, and I can't neccessarily say the same thing about Grease, once Max and Laura leave (Just like Sweet Charity w/Christina Applegate). If you have time for another show, you should definitley take them to The Little Mermaid. They would probably be in awe :) It's a great production, as you can expect with Disney. End of story. Although I do not believe there are any discounts available for Little Mermaid yet online. Have a great time :)
