OK, I finally got this computer back up and running, so I'll try to fill y'all in on our trip to the city. We arrived on Tuesday had dinner at the Tavern on the Green and then went to see the Little Mermaid. WOW! That set was incredible, it really felt like you were in the sea. The singing was fabulous and I especially loved Ursula and her green eels, sooo funny. I kept wishing we had our 23 year old daughter with us to see the movie she loved so much performed on stage. Our 11 year old sang "Part of Your World" coming and going from the show. I wasn't really looking forward to the show, thinking it was going to be so-so(maybe I was burned out along with our VHS) but I was so thrilled to be blown away by this amazing production!
The next day, after lunch, we went to see GREASE!!!! I can't tell you how thrilling it was to sit in the seventh row and see Derek & Ashley appear on stage to cheers from their fans in the audience. I enjoyed the beginning with the Rydell kids and the dialog leading into "Summer Nights" and then Marty's bedroom scene. Sandy was played like a sweet, new, slightly awkward high school girl wanting to somehow fit in. I was kind of surprised to see Sandy go after Rizzo later on in the show. The first act seemed to lull at times I don't know why, if it is the order of scenes or what but it's a good thing Greased Lightning was in the middle to keep me going. Ashley's voice was perfect, I could feel the emotion in hopelessly devoted and although I would've liked to see Sandy at the dance, I really loved the duet that Ashley sang with Jan "It's Raining On Prom Night"...very clever and well done:) The second act was especially great, I kept looking over at people in the audience tapping their feet and moving to the music. Ashley's transformation to sexy Sandy after singing Goodbye to Sandra Dee was great, although they had a little bit of wardrobe malfunction because Sandy's outfit had to be safety-pinned in the back...that must've been some quick-change. TH sang and played BSDO and it fit in the show really nice, I really enjoyed it. After the show we went backstage, it was neat to see all the props and tracks and pulleys with the car and counter. TH was friendly. He told Ashley she needed to get outside to her fans that were waiting.
After dinner, we went with Ashley to see Legally Blonde, 7th row again... OMG!!! Bailey did a great job for her second week as well. This show was so much fun... I especially liked the UPS guy...what a hunk! There were fans at this show who stopped Ashley to say they saw Grease today and loved her, could they get a picture. She actually was signing autographs after the LB show for Grease fans. Hmmm ... sounds like they were on the same treck as us! Here's an interesting fact: The Legally Blonde playbill was also in black and white. It's beginning to look like a pattern...maybe this is how shows crossover when leads are changed.
The next day, after walking around SOHO and Little Italy, we had dinner at Thalia's and headed to the Gershwin for Wicked, this time first row Mezzanine. What an awesome show. Our favorite numbers were Defying Gravity and Popular. The set was massive and truly incredible. What a great story, too. I was actually surprised by the ending. Now I will have to read the book this year. After the show, my Bday, we hung out with Ashley along with several other actors and stage hands. What a fantastic trip!!! Turning 50 couldn't've been more fun. I had my family, parents, and a beautiful star to help me celebrate. Thanks for the memories. The first act seemed to lull at times I don't know why, if it is the order of scenes or what but it's a good thing Greased Lightning was in the middle to keep me going.
Yes, it still has Elle holding the books. Kate did a great job on the show as Margot. She has such a powerful voice, it would be nice to see her in a role that could showcase it more.
How did your poster turn out? As I said in a different thread I sent a profesional shot from MLB.com to Walmart to have it blown up into an 8x10. It came out so poorly.

The Legally Blonde logo will never change - it's a generic cartoon (of Laura Bell Bundy), changed just enough that they don't have to pay to use her likeness. They do, however, have Baily Hanks' photo HUGE on the side of the theater lobby. HUGE.
Playbills go to b&w to save money. Some start out that way (like the non-profit theater companies), others stay in color for the bulk of their run (Wicked). Some go back and forth (Spamalot, Aida).
Glad you had a good time. I loved the MERMAID set, as well.
I never got it, ran out of time. I was supposed to wait for an email saying it was ready. I"ll bet it was worse than yours and they trashed it. Plus, it's probably illegal to print it that way anyway. I saw the color playbill on the good day new york spot with Derek and Ashley. It looks like it will be making its way to the theater soon. I can't wait. Oh Ahsley said they were working on getting a poster print with the cast signatures for my student fighting Leukemia. So hopefully it will get done soon.
Darn, I was hoping you had a better experience and I'd give Staples a try. I wanted to get an 8x10 signed for a friend without having to dip into my personal collection. Looks like I'll have to anyway.

Thanks, Texsfan5, for the wonderful report!!! I'm so glad that you had such a great trip! I really enjoyed reading about it! And I'm glad that you and your family, especially the Fan Club President Abby, were able to spend some time with Ashley! I'm sure that she enjoyed seeing all of you so much!!! And that's great that you were able to all go and see "Legally Blonde" together! Thanks so much for sharing with us!
Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday Texasfan. How great to be able to see so many shows in one trip. Did you order all of your tickets in advance? It is great to hear how much you enjoyed Grease, Ashley and TH. Sounds like the perfect way to celebrate a "0" birthday thank God they only come every ten years.
Thanks Just Dandy. I ordered the Little Mermaid tickets a few days before we left for new york. Our Grease and LB tickets were arranged for us through insider connections. The Wicked tickets, I just went to the Gershwin theater the day before and asked. I was willing to pay the regular full price of $111, but not 220+ for whatever premium tickets they were offering. It took a few minutes but they offered us the 3 mezz tickets and we were thrilled, especially since I could not seem to find tickets online ahead of time.
After the show on Thursday the actors and broadway people kept asking us which show was our favorite. Our daughter kept shouting GREASE of course and so did we, but I also said it's really not fair to compare it's like comparing apples to grapes to oranges and bananas. They were all great...each one unique and very different, we loved them all, but especially Grease; being able to see Ashley play Sandy...such a different role from Amber in Hairspray (which I saw twice). It is great to see her talent showcased in this role, it shows how well she can portray each part. The sexy Sandy part just couldn't be played any better!!!
This was my third trip in a year. Before that, I've only seen regional theater since I'm in Dallas. Jersey Boys is playing here now and LB is scheduled to travel here next summer. Yea!
Enjoyed your post Texanfan5. It is great that you can just walk up the the Gershwin Theater and get great seats for the next day. How lucky was that. I bet a lot of people would be afraid they wouldn't get tickets.
On a previous visit this year, I went to see both Gypsy and In the Heights. Both of these I went to see because the reviews were good and they were up for Tony awards. I had seen both Gypsy movies years ago and was probably too familiar with that story. Gypsy was my least favorite musical on broadway so far. The actors all did a great job, just not my favorite broadway show. Personally, I felt that In the Heights was great, young, new, original. I loved the way they brought fresh new popular music into broadway. The scene with the cell phones lighting up the neighborhood during a blackout was priceless.
It was interesting that both these shows had actresses nominated for tony awards. Personally I felt that Olga Merediz who plays Abuela Claudia should've won the award over Laura Benanti who played Louise(Gypsy Rose Lee). In the Heights was so moving, fresh, and well performed. Olga was really believable in her role as the grandmother, I almost cried when she sang her song "hundreds of stories"? remembering where they came from, how the neighborhood was and how it changed.
We tried to go see South Pacific but it was sold out. I'm wondering how I would feel about it today. I loved the movie when it came out years ago, but the theme is dated. It think the music and dance numbers would be so lively though. What do you think? Has anybody seen it?
Thanks StockardFan! I'm in withdrawal mode now. I just went and purchased front row seats for Jersey Boys tomorrow night in Dallas!...I think that will help ease me back into the real world...I'm dreading going back to teach 5th grade. Next week starts in-service.
Some places it still does. Where I live it does, but my sister's county which is only a few away, they start the week before Labor Day.
Up North most schools start after Labor Day, but in the South they start in August, some of which have already started. Also, they get out of school in June up North, and in May in the South. I know they all have to attend school the same amount of days.
It's my mom knowing me too well and how I like to spend my time. Before I graduated college I spent most of my summer either working or at baseball games. I was there a couple times a week usually from noon to midnight. I had a lot of friends who worked for the stadium and we'd all just hang and have a good time.

I think she's just saying her mom said that once she was a teacher she could spend her time going to baseball games in the summer. My guess is professional games?
OK, there's teachers here who do the same thing for Texas Stadium, working there in the summer. It's a great way to see the games for free while making a little extra money.

Philadelphia Phillies.
I never worked there. I just hung out there.
