New SP Recap
Permalink Closed

Well, Taylor only has a couple of weeks left in Grease, and the SP are really descending on Broadway for his remaining shows. Quite a few were there on Friday and Saturday, and I thought I'd bring over one of those recaps and start a thread, so more can be added throughout the next two weeks. What's really interesting (IMO) is that many of the people going to see Grease now, already saw the show in June/July, and they're discussing any changes they observed. (In this recap, the new leads are also mentioned.)

From 4tay at the BB -

"I am happy to report that Taylor and Grease are better than ever.
Taylor has really made the role his own. So many artistic flourishes and new and improved moves. The show was so much better than when I saw it in June.

The audience was cheering for everyone. They were all that good. Taylor did receive the biggest applause but the audience was there to have a good time and it made the performances that much more pumped up.

I spoke to Taylor at the barricades after the matinee. He signed my CD and is extremely happy to have his music out there. He really wanted this to happen and he is very happy indeed that it has finally happened.

After the show we had a meet and greet. It was pleasant, organized and friendly. Taylor was very comfortable. He looks fantastic, happy and relaxed. Always a gentleman.

I can't believe this will be over in 2 weeks. I did hear him say he was done Sept. 7th. And, his hair is his, not a wig. He said the hairdressers are very crafty and do a great job every night to take care of his hair.

In between the two shows, we met with 15 people who came from all over the country. We had a great dinner next door to the theater and lots of Taylor talk.

I am glad I went back to see this more confident, polished and happy Taylor. His enthusiasm for Broadway seems to have elevated the entire cast but they are great in their own right.

I love the new leads and the new Rizzo. The audience was cheering and clapping for them all. Well-deserved praise. Taylor was the special part of the show. He was electric.

The billboard still has two Grease banners. Wicked moved down to the bottom square facing Broadway.

It was a long day but rewarding to see Taylor so happy and successful. He appreciates everyone who comes to see the show. I am glad I went again."

This recap of 4tay's is posted on the Boogie Board in the "Grease" thread under Boogie Board Fan Recaps - Part Two. (If you have a few hours with nothing to do (LOL) and don't mind reading how awesome Taylor is about 1000 times, Parts 1 and 2 of the Fan Recaps are fun to read! But we're talking pages and pages, and then more pages!)

Thanks D&B, I definitely don't plan on bailing off of here as soon as Taylor is gone, this is a fun and interesting forum smile  Even when the Laura and Ashley fans are duking it out, lol biggrin  Also, I'm going to be very curious about how the new Teen Angel and Ace fare in their roles smile

I don't know if this will work. (Can you get to the home page of the Boogie, and just not find the thread, or is it the actual site you can't get to? If you can't get to the site, you should be able to get to the MySpace for the boogie board. Then you can just click on the link to the boogie board from there.) The MySpace link is: www.myspace.com/tayloristheboogie

This is the address of the page with the recap:

There are many Taylor Fan Boards, all offering something that might be of value to any new fan that Taylor has found since his "Grease " appearance.

If you have time , take the opportunity of look into any or all of the following fan boards. I see that the Boogie Board has already been mentioned, so I have not included that is the list .

How about if Taylor plays the Beacon again, we all meet up in NY? When he played there last year, people said it was fabulous! But then again, I think we could count on one hand the number of shows that people said were anything less than wonderful - and those were due to either the venue, or a couple of times when he was sick and had a high fever! I remember NY being special though, and I can't remember exactly why - unless it was that a big group of SP, who hadn't met before that night, were hooking up. And also, 'Gray Charles' was at the Beacon, and that was a big deal for original members of his Board. But, yes, Taylor's concerts are terrific. Everyone leaves smiling and looking forward to their next one!

I plan to stick around after Taylor's run on Broadway concludes also. Although my registration was only approved recently, I've enjoyed reading the comments by other members and it's been nice to have some limited interaction with you.

I know many of you had some hesitations about Taylor's inclusion in the cast of Grease but I can hope you will continue to follow his career in the future.

Here's a clip from the Beacon Theatre to show you how much fun a Taylor Hicks concert can be!

Great clip. As I noticed before, Taylor gives the band free reign. It's like they're all equally important. I'll be looking for a concert that I can go to. It can't be too far and it has to be a venue with seats, not the HOB circuit.

I saw D on Aug.2, here in Central PA, in a county fair type setup, 3,000 people I would estimate. He was the whole show, and he put on a good one. Of course, he has all those hits to work with. I had to see him once and that was enough.

Taylor always gives his band free reign, and many people respect him for that. I've never seen D in concert except at the Season 5 Tour, but I have seen Taylor three different times in concert and plan on going again when he tours next year.

Without sounding overly dramatic,I can't stress enough that if you haven't seen Taylor Hicks in concert be sure to do so when and if you get the chance. The electricity in the room.once he takes the stage is hard to describe,he is so in tune with his audience and feeds off their energy as they do his !I have been to three of his concerts and was lucky enough to have a meet and greet and I'll tell you that each show is different, he has that rare ability to take a song and change it just enough to keep it interesting and new. The band is always outstanding, the mutual respect is evident as they most definitely compliment each other. What I love most about Taylor is that he is not just a singer/song writer he is an amazing entertainer. How lucky for us that he found his way to AI.I can't wait for him to tour again !

Hey Judy -

Ditto to everything you wrote! It's amazing what happens when Taylor bounds onto a stage! The energy level and electricity passing through the audience really is hard to explain! He's just such a total presence; and because he surrounds himself with such talented musicians, it's like the ultimate "two-fer!" Instead of trying to be the star of the show, you can see that he revels in bringing the band into every arrangement, and it is one of the highlights (for me anyway) to watch him direct and control every note they play with just his hand. It's difficult to explain, but it's such a joy to watch. He interacts so closely with each of the guys, and his face just lights up, when they do something especially spectacular. It's impossible to pick the highlight of a Taylor concert. Honestly, he basically "owns" the audience - and they love every minute of it! I cannot wait for another tour! (Wonder how many shows he'll do in the northeast this time, Judy? "We'll be there, be there, be there!" LOL!)

I can't agree more! My sister and I traveled from Upstate NY to MN. for our first Taylor concert. At the time I was totally Taylorized and my sister liked him from AI but thought I was a little off the deep end, if you know what I mean. Well, I was able to get her to travel with me because it was at a casino and she figured that would make the trip worthwhile. Anyway, she got caught up in the excitement even before the concert -- must have been all the anticipation that was runnng rampet at the casino. She woke me up at 5:30 a.m. to tell me that the buses pulled in at the front doors -- LOL! Like two school girls (and believe me that's a BIG stretch of the memory and imagination) we pointed and giggled and tried to figure out who was who, etc. There were other incidents during the next day, like getting my picture taken with Brian the saxaphone player, etc. and meeting Taylor as he rushed past me at the front doors, etc. But, getting back on topic, we went to the show and had great seats. Now, I knew I was gonna love the show but I was awestruck and when I looked at my sister I could see she was hit by the wooooo. Anyway early into the show we looked at each other and simultaneously gently extended our hand and pointed a finger all the while smiling -- yes, we noticed his band leading method and it was a thing of beauty! It is so hard to explain, but he does it with such grace and fluidity that I could just watch that all day. Anyway when we left that theater we were both in a Taylor-induced trance. I had heard about it but even though I was a huge fan, I never expected to actually experience it. And, I am not even going to try to explain it -- you just have to live it to believe it.

We are once again ready to pack our bags and head to a Taylor concert -- and now my sister doesn't even care if it is at a casino -- LOL!

Bonnie -

Love the way you express yourself! (Great line - " LOL! Like two school girls (and believe me that's a BIG stretch of the memory and imagination) we pointed and giggled and tried to figure out who was who, etc.")

It's so funny that none of us know the other (for the most part) but no matter what part of the country we're from, or what our lifestyles are, we all have the same reaction to Taylor - and face the same reluctance from friends and family regarding him - until we finally prevail! The line about your sister going with you because the show was at a casino, and she figured it would make the trip worthwhile, made me chuckle! That's exactly how it's been for me with my girlfriends, who are just casual Taylor fans. I bribe them to come to shows with me (paying for the tickets and other expenses) and they come - not because of the concert - but because of all the extras that come along with it. Unlike your sis, though, they still don't seem to have been hit by the total "woo" - and I would still classify them as casual fans. I thought taking them to NY to see "Grease" would seal the deal, and it's obvious they really enjoy and think highly of him - but my honest guess is that they'll never embrace total "TIBO" (Taylor induced black out!) And that's o.k. - as long as they're ready and willing to travel with me when I need them! I do admit that for me, though, it's definitely much more fun to experience Taylor with other die-hard SP'ers. I think that's because you don't have to explain everything ad nauseam - and you can just enjoy the magic!

Since we're still awaiting new recaps, I thought I'd bring an earlier one (July) over from the BB. I'm going to try to find a couple of poignant ones. Hopefully, they'll be "new" to a few people here. This is Part 1 of shirlanne's recap.

Posted July 20th, 2008 06:42 PM

Just to check in, I haven't had time to look at everything, but I did go Thursday night and as everyone has said about the other shows there are just no words. If anyone is thinking about going or on the fence about going, go and for everyone going in the future it is a blast. I enjoyed everything about Grease, the entire show, the cast, the music just wonderful. First of all New York City was amazing! I went with a best friend, my sister and her best friend. Our four days and three nights were not enough, our entire trip was just perfect. Of course Thursday was Grease day, and we were excited. I have read everything anyone has posted and watched any video available, but when you are in your seat and you know the show is beginning it is amazing. We had sixth row seats on the left side, which is the side you want if you can get it. As I said I loved the entire play but when the ice cream cone comes out the electricity just flies thru the theater. The theater was packed and lots and lots of young girls, teenagers, familes, just a wonderful mix and everyone got excited when the cone came out. All the adjectives have been used up but I can only say when the ice cream cone opens he is funny, sexy, and just so darn cute. His voice was right on and when he came to the left side of the stage and ran his finger thru his hair, he actually smelled of his finger and made a face, it was so funny, I don't think he does that every show but he did Thurs. night. It goes by so fast and I really wish there was instant replay, but I think that is what he did, he looked amazing even when he was smelling of his finger (ha ha). It was all over to fast, but we had so much fun. Something very special happened at the stage door for a special little girl, I'll post that later when I've unpacked. We were in NY starting Wed thru Sat. and I've just gotten home. My nerves have not settled down yet, they may never."

Continuing with Part 2 of shirlanne's recap -

Posted July 20th, 2008 06:57 PM

"We hurried to the stage door to get our program signed, we were there in a flash, he was out two minutes later, I think he was in a hurry to leave. There was a special little girl in a wheelchair beside me with her Mom and Dad. She looked up at me and said "I love Taylor Hicks" and I told her I did also. She smiled so big. Her Mom told me that she had seen him on AI and that she went to an AI concert and did not get to meet him and was crushed. Taylor came down the line and when he got to us we just yelled "War Eagel", he looked up and smiled and gave us a victory`sign, signed our play thingy and then saw the little girl. He went down on his knee and called her sweetheart and asked her name (then asked how to spell it.) She was overcome, so he told her her parents to wait just a minute.

He went over to sign at the other barricade. His bodyguard came over and took the family backstage. Taylor went back inside and stayed a few minutes. He came back out waved and jumped in his car and left. The little girl and her family came out, and she was grinning from ear to ear. She had a beautiful 8 by l0 photo of him with a message on it. We all cheered, and her day had been made.

Just a special story that made a special night even more so. We sang all the way back to the hotel as I said it was just perfect night."

Glad you enjoyed the clip, Ray. As others have said, Taylor is the consumate performer/entertainer. Taylor has a unique talent of taking the old R&R classics and reworking them to make the music even more dynamic than the original. Check out his performance of "Compared to What". This is going to sound strange but once Taylor gets into the "zone" he seems to feel the music and lets himself become an instrument himself. Believe it or not, Taylor was ill at the time of this concert in New Orleans! biggrin.gif
