Grease Review from October 21...
Permalink Closed

Ladies and Gentleman, my sister's Grease review (humbly bowing):

Hi everybody, my registration is pending otherwise I'd post this myself. I went to Grease last Tuesday with a friend from work (we are flight attendants who were in NY for the night).

I have seen Grease three times previously with my sister (with Laura and Max), and we have gone to NY several times to see other Broadway musicals. During the Grease reality show my favorites were Laura and Derek, but Ashley was always my second choice for Sandy, and Max really wowed me after seeing him in person. I would loved to have seen the Laura/Derek combination, as I thought they had a good chemistry on the show.

*This review is my honest opinion, and is not meant to make friends or enemies.

The show started with Dominic coming out as Vince Fontaine to warm up the audience and sing some oldies. He was good there, and in the show, although sometimes he tried a bit too hard and came off as a little desperate and cheesy, rather than the sexy older man that Marty has a crush on. He seemed very happy to be there though!

I was surprised at all the empty seats (about 4 to my left, and 2 to our right, as well as some in the row behind us - we were in orchestra left, row B). I kept thinking people would come to fill up the seats, but they never did, and it was nice to have some space! But bad for the show's grosses, I imagine!

Then the show began with the high school scene, instead of the silhouette of Danny and Sandy professing eternal love at the beach. I missed that, because I think that it really set the tone, and let people know that they had fallen in love that summer.

The stand-outs to me were Frenchy, Eugene, the Teen Angel, Miss Lynch, and Ace Young as Kenickie. I really missed Jose as Sonny, he was great comic relief and very watchable. Stephen Buntrock is great as always, so funny and perfect for the role.

Ashley is very tall and pretty and her voice was nice, better than she sounded on tv, though she was flat for a few notes. To be honest, she's just not believable as a Catholic schoolgirl, but the line where she says "to hell with it" before "You're the one that I want" was believable. That was the one time I never believed Laura. Ashley seems better suited to the role in Hairspray or maybe as Marty, something a little sexier and more sophisticated, like a college sorority girl perhaps. You can't believe anyone taking advantage of her - she just is not the type to pine over a guy, which brings me to Derek. I have to say that I was disappointed because I expected more from his performance on the reality show, and because he's done the role before. He is definitely physically the Danny type, but there was no depth or sincerity to his performance, and he didn't seem like a leader or like he was "in the moment". To me, there was just no chemistry between the two of them. I know they're only onstage together for a short amount of time, but you just don't root for them to survive the chaos and misunderstandings, because they don't act like they even enjoy being together.

One change which could have been cute was the scene at the drive-in, where Danny and Sandy are kissing and he wants to feel her chest. It's a funny premise, but went on for about 30 seconds too long, when it just became silly and uncomfortable.

The real standout to me was Ace Young as Kenickie. I've never seen him perform before, and I don't know anything about his American Idols days. He has stage presence, star quality, and sex appeal. I could easily see him as Danny. He was the one I watched most of the time - he was fresh and exciting and seemed to really want to be there.

Rizzo is too harsh for me. In the movie she seems to have a bit of a sense of humor - she's not as mean as she is in the play - but just comes off as too cool for school and a little insecure.

Another change was the lack of dancing during the final scenes. I was expecting lots of energy, but it was more just hand clapping and hopping around. Perhaps Ashley and Derek are healing from injuries or something, but those scenes used to be high kicks, twirling, and lots of connection and dancing between Sandy and Danny.

During the show the audience was pretty non-responsive and most of the jokes fell flat, though there was polite applause. There were no standing ovations or loud cheering at the end, and the cast basically walked off into the wings (instead of the high energy dancing that I was used to).

After the show several people came outside to pose for pictures and sign autographs, including the actors who played Doody, Sonny, Marty, Rizzo, Teen Angel, and Vince Fontaine. Then Ashley came out and was very sweet to everyone, and after her, Derek came out and signed as well. Ace Young came out last, and spent the most time with his fans. He was extremely nice and gracious to everyone, making small talk, and posing for pictures. I am now an Ace fan! What I liked about Max and Laura is that they always came out and signed together, because they knew people wanted pictures of the two of them, and they always laughed and joked with each other and seemed to really like being together. Ashley and Derek didn't come out together and I never saw them look at each other or speak to each other.

Two ladies who stood next to us had come out from Chicago and asked where Max was, because that was whom they were hoping to see. We told them that he was back in LA, working on film projects.

All in all, I wouldn't be shocked to hear if Grease was on it's way out, and I would never spend money to see it again. My friend liked it, not as much for the play itself, but because she liked the music, and to hear it in person. I'm glad that I got to see it with this cast as a comparison, but except for Ace Young, the changes are inferior compared to how it used to be. Like I said before, this is solely my honest opinion, and I know many of you won't agree with me because you have been waiting for Ashley and/or Derek to be in the show. They are just fine, but perhaps not for these roles, or to be matched together. Have a great night everyone, and thanks for reading my review!!

Terri

Thanks for the review. Tuesday night is traditionally a slow night in the theater at most shows so I am not surprised it was a bit empty. The cast feeds off the audience so both sides suffered from lack of energy I supposed.

Thanks for the kind words about Jose.

Gee Dana, I guess your sister is Flygirl from the Broadway World message board. The review is almost identical there was really no need to post it again and DogsandBirds, now you know. And oh by the way, I thought your family which would include Terry just loved Ashley, thats what you led her to believe.

How about at least editing out her home address? Whatever your issues are her home addy shouldn't be posted on a public message board. That's all I'm asking

I suppose it was some kind of joke, asking for a photograph which Ashley was kind enough to send. Given the review Ashley got she must have used her picture for a dart board.

I understand what's going on, but what I can't get is how you could proclaim to be such a big fan of someone's and then turn around and say such negative things.  Makes no sense!  furious

That's what I do with the picture of me and Ashley.  Though I'm usually aiming for myself

Wow this is amusing, Dana says "During the Grease reality show my favorites were Laura and Derek, but Ashley was always my second choice for Sandy." Now, read her Emails to Ashley and see if you get that impression. Her words sound like the crackle of confederate money.

I agree--very contradictory!  What happened to the loyalty?  weirdface  And even more importantly, kindness?  Especially to someone who was so kind to you.

You know what people, even if I did not like a persons performance I would never come on here and say so. I was brought up better than that. I would never make a negative comment about Laura or Max because I know how hard they both worked on the TV show and on Broadway. It's tough and actors deserve a lot of credit, more than we have seen here today.

Whats so confusing about it????? It looks like the emails posted by Suddenly_Sandy was from Dana and the original post or review was from her sister Terri, not Dana. Not confusing to me.

What is confusing to me is why Dana is being attacked or for that matter why Terri is being attacked for just making her opinion public. Some people do, some people don't. Its just that simple.

You obviously didn't see Flygir2's comments yesterday on the Jose thread. Now that I know what she does for a living, her SN would indicate that she is a flight attendant. Go read those comments, todays were a little watered down.

Is Flygirl2 your sister LauraFan1? You said she was going to the show on Tuesday didn't you? This is what she had to say about the show, guess she didn't like it. This post is from the Broadwayworld message board.

Hi Kristen, so glad you got to see Ashley as Sandy. I went to the show on Tuesday. I had seen it with Max and Laura and the original cast, and I must say, I think it was better with the originals. The standout to me was Ace Young, both in the show, and afterwards with his fans at the stage door. I think that Ashley was probably great in Hairspray, but didn't think that she is believable as a 50's Catholic schoolgirl. Derek, who was my favorite on the NBC show, was a bit of a disappointment as well, and kind of "grinned" his way through the show. There were several empty seats in the theater on either sides of my friend and I, as well as behind us, so I wouldn't be surprised if the show closed in the near future. The audience was pretty nonresponsive to the songs as well as most of the jokes, and there were no standing ovations or loud applause. I was a bit surprised that "ballerina Sandy" seemed like a non-dancer to me, the show definetely lacked a lot of energy. Of course, this is all in comparison to Max and Laura, so maybe if you hadn't seen the original cast, then it would have seemed better. Now it is like a good amateur production. Max and Laura had so much energy and chemistry, they even came out afterwards and signed autographs and posed for pictures together! There seems to be no such connection between Derek and Ashley. I understand that there's a Grease forum and I will try to write a full review this weekend. Good night Grease fans!

Hi everyone, this is TERRI, not Dana, and I am the one that posted the review regarding the show on October 21. I am a fan of Ashley, and I was during the reality show as well. As I said she was my 2nd favorite. When I saw her as Sandy, though, I was not impressed with her performance as Sandy. As I said in my review, I'm sure she'd be great in another role, someone with more confidence and sex appeal than Sandy is written to have. I had thought of Sandy as more of an innocent schoolgirl. I'm glad that she is able to do the role right now, and give people the chance to see her.

To be clear, my sister Dana is a fan of hers as well, but has never seen her perform in person. And she is very grateful for the signed picture, she has it in her collection. Again, we like Ashley!!

I'm not sure about all the uproar, it was just my honest opinion regarding the show.

I was at the show last Tuesday. I wish I had seen the seats in the Orchestra that were empty. They told us there weren't any left and I ended up in the balcony while my two friends bought Orchestra seats that were hard to find. They told us there were only single seats left!!

As for the audience reaction, I know we were all screaming and yelling during Greased Lightning and during the finale. Were we at the same show???

Thanks for the kind words about Ace, though. We've been with him for a while and are in this for the long haul. It's good to see others are finally seeing his true talent!
