Hello to all of Laura's fans! This is Laura's Mom, Jane, and I am both thrilled and sad to report that Laura and Nate left this morning from our Minnesota home to head out to their new home in New York! They have all their belongings in a U-Haul truck and have a 2-3 day journey ahead of themselves. We joked how fun it would be to write on their truck: "Broadway or bust!" or "New York here we come" but we're hopelessly law abiding citizens and of course wouldn't damage the truck! It was a fun thought!
We have had a fabulous few days with them since they got back from their honeymoon and both our families have helped them pack, have played together, and last night had a "last supper" together. We sang a few songs around the piano, shed a few tears, and shared memories. We're all so thrilled for Laura and Nate that it helps to balance out how sad we feel for ourselves that they are leaving our every day lives. We have been close families to our children and have loved being very involved in their lives and raising them. But great parents also let go and give their kids wings when it is time and we have the unbelievable blessing of releasing our kids and seeing them soar to such magnificent heights so early in life. What could be more exciting than all the things that we have seen happen in our lives the last 7 months? Nate and Laura's engagement, the "Grease" show week by week, WINNING the "Grease" show, planning and having a wedding, and an adventerous move to New York City! As talented as Laura is, I never could have imagined such an opportunity coming to her in this way and at such a young age. She hoped to get to Broadway someday, but most people have to get there through such a laborious process of weeks or months of auditions and then many still don't make it. And as expensive as living in New York City is, I don't know how so many people are able to even attempt that.
That brings up an interesting topic: Many people say things to young talented actors like--"You should go to New York City and be on Broadway! Don't get stuck in THIS town." People who say that either have no practical knowledge of the extremely difficult process that entails, or they do not understand or fully grasp how much money it would take to be able to do that. We are a family of above average means, but I am stunned at the cost of moving Nathan and Laura to New York and I wonder how other of the contestants on the Grease show could have managed it if they had won. Costs of moving were not part of the winning package and these are young people barely getting started in life. Once the show starts they will be fine on a monthly basis, but it takes a great deal just to get moved there and to establish a small apartment. They have learned a lot! And the other side to that "move to New York" coin is that there are many other fabulous cities where theatre is alive and well and many great actors make a living in them who thrill audiences all across America. I must say that Minneapolis is such a city. You may not know it, but Minneapolis rates right behind New York City for the most theatre seats per capita and the most alive theatre environment in the nation. We have two Tony award winning regional theatres (the Guthrie and the Children's Theatre Company) as well as several other large theatres and countless smaller ones. Laura has performed at many of them. We also have what I believe is the largest dinner theatre in the nation, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, where Laura was performing as Sandy in "Grease" when she began auditioning for the TV Grease competition. So don't limit your dreams, necessarily, but also don't consider it a second-rate career to perform in another city other than New York. The rest of us in America that don't live in New York love theatre too and love to see great shows! And in Minneapolis actors actually can own a home, have a yard, have a family....what a concept! The other side of that fence isn't always greener!
With that said, there is also an unmatched thrill of a Broadway dream come true. I am thrilled Laura and Nate are young and can experience this now. They have much to look forward to in their lives and this may only be the beginning of a fantastic career. I have a secret dream that Andrew Lloyd Webber will call Laura to be in his new, "Phantom of the Opera" sequel! Don't start that as a rumor because NO, Andrew Lloyd Webber has not seen or talked to Laura since the Grease show and we have no reason to think he's even thinking of it...but hey, I'm a Mom and I can dream if I want to! The fact that he was "staggered" by Laura will forever ring in my ears as one of the sweetest memories I'll ever have! Whew! That was big!
Well, these are the kind of Mom notes I often write. Friends who have known me for a long time seem to like them. It surprises me! If you like them too, I'll write more once in a while! Pray for a safe journey for Laura and Nathan. Thank you for your great love and support of them!
Laura's mom.. thank you for that beautiful note and I would like more of them... And as for Laura's talent... first time I saw her on the show, I knew she was the One... I just can not wait to hear in in person...
Thank you for the update, Laura's mom. It's great that both the families were able to come together to send Laura and Nate on their way to NYC. And it's wonderful that the two of them have your support and the knowledge that they have their families behind them.
You do bring up some really good points about the high cost of living in New York. I have friends who live there and I am staggered by the cost of their housing and what they consider a reasonable price for dinner. Of course, wages are higher also, but that doesn't always extend to the performing arts and it is hard for new actors to try to live there, audition and work at something that pays enough to live. If I recall right, Alli lives in a boarding house and Derek shares an apartment with other actors.
And you are right that they are many very good regional theaters across the country. My city doesn't have one, but I am within a few hours of San Francisco, which has excellent theater, and one of the finest year round (and Tony winning) theaters at Ashland, Oregon. So, there are lots of places where actors can work and live outside NYC.
But having said all that, isn't Broadway the mecca? It's the dream job for American stage actors and Laura is on her way to that dream. It's so exciting!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post...both as a fan of Laura's charismatic talent and also as another mom with a son recently graduated from college and in transition to his first professional job in a new city. Please continue to write us.
Thank you so much for posting these updates. It is much appreciated. I'm sooo excited for Laura. She is definitely a role model for many I'm sure, I included. I can't wait to see her live... 2 months and 1 day!!! SOO excited!
Jane, Thanks for your message. I wish Laura and Nate the best for the rest of their lives. I will in fact be seeing GREASE on its REAL opening day..July24 th. )I cannot wait to see it and am sure it wull be an exciting adventure. As a mom whose kids are on the cusp of leaving the nest as well I can imagine the difficulty of letting go balanced with the joy of seeing your child fly so high. Seems like you did a wonderful job with your daughter.
Laura and Nate arrived safely on Saturday in Manhatten and are beyond ecstatic with their new small apartment! Everything is already set up and put away and they can't believe they're there! Max moves today. This is all really happening!
Hi Jane! I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Mall of America a few Saturday's back, along with my sister------it was beyond awesome to finally hear Laura sing live, she is a star (as you well know!) We have our tickets for a show in September, and I'm just counting the days for it----I know this show is going to be HUGE!!!! I just adore Laura and Max together, I hoped and prayed that they would win :) Thank you for your updates on her progress, I'm so happy Nate and Laura made it to New York and are settling in! Please do continue to update the good folks on this message board, what a treat to get "inside info" from a true insider :) I wanted to tell you something I didn't say at the Mall, and that is, that I think you are a WONDERFUL mother, it is reflected in Laura, she could NOT be sweeter, more gracious, or more down-to-earth, and I think you are to thank for that. She is the kind of daughter every parent dreams of, and I know she is so lucky to have you as a mom :) Please take care, and post some updates soon and often, I love hearing any morsel of "Laura News", ha ha! Thanks Jane!!! Dana in West St Paul, MN
LAURA'S MOM....THIS IS CARLEY'S MOM. I JUST WANTED TO TAKE A MOMEMT AND CONGRATULATE YOU ON RAISING SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, THOUGHTFUL AND TALENTED DAUGHTER. MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND I NEVER MISSED A BEAT WITH THE GREASE SHOWS. SHE AND I WERE ADVID FANS OF BOTH LAURA AND MAX FROM THE FIRST SHOW ON. WE WILL BE GOING TO NEW YORK AUG 13-17 JUST TO SEE THE SHOW. WE WERE SOOOOO SURE THAT THEY WOULD BOTH WIN THAT WE BOUGHT PRESELL TICKETS THE VERY FIRST WEEK! THE REALLY NICE ADD TO THIS IS THAT WE WILL BE AT THE 8PM SHOW ON AUGUST 15TH. WHICH IS ALSO MY DAUGHTERS 17TH BIRTHDAY. THE ONLY THING THAT SHE WANTED FOR HER BIRTHDAY WAS TO SEE LAURA AND MAX IN PERSON!!!!!!! I HAVE TO TELL YOU......JUST A SHORT 18 MONTHS BACK, CARLEY TRIED TO COMMIT SUICIDE AFTER HER BEST FRIEND AND "BROTHER", CHARLIE, WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AND WE HAD TO PULL THE PLUG AFTER A HORRENDOUS HEAD INJURY. SHE WAS IN QUITE A STUPOR FOR A REALLY LONG TIME. TO SEE MY DAUGHTER, SO HAPPY AGAIN AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE AGAIN MAKES ME THE HAPPIEST MOM ALIVE! I REALLY FEEL THAT SHE TOOK PART IN THE TRY-OUTS MENTALLY WITH BOTH YOUR DAUGHTER AND MAX. SHE ALSO CALLED ON ALL HER FRIENDS TO VOTE EACH AND EVERY WEEK. I FEEL THAT THE MERE ACT OF HER PARTICIPATION IS WHAT BROUGHT HER THROUGH THE MOST HORRIFIC TIME OF HER LIFE AND AGAIN I THANK YOU.
Carley, you're breaking my heart with the story of your daughter and her difficult time after her friend's accidental death. Life has it's hard times there can be no doubt. It is hard to remember in the difficult times that good times will come again. As adults we get a little more complete perspective on that as we gather experience on this journey of life and watch it ebb and flow. But teens seem to feel only what they are currently feeling and have a harder time balancing it out with that hope of a better day. If Laura could be even a piece of your daughter's return to joy that is more thrilling to me than her winning a Broadway role. Some of the joy and stability you see in Laura is her tremendous faith in God. With God as an anchor the ship may toss and turn but there is always a firm hand on your shoulder pointing the way. Thank you for sharing your story!
And LauraFan1 (Dana), you and your sister are very fun people as well. Thank you for the compliments on raising Laura. I have put a lot into raising my two children, but God gets credit for designing them and they get some credit too for both making a lot of good choices and few bad ones. Sometimes good parents have basically good kids but they may take a wrong turn here and there and sometimes those turns create difficult consequences to their lives. I used to talk to my children all the time about consequences. I often pointed out situations where people made bad choices and the consequences were excrutiating. Only one chance! Can't take it back. Left to live with the scars. Our choices matter. And our choices have consequences--either good or bad. Make good choices and generally you have a much easier life. Funny how many people don't understand that! They make bad choices then feel so genuinely surprised by the consequences--like they never thought about that possibility happening. I think it's important for a parent to teach about consequences. That's my parental lesson for the day!

Carley, I don't know if you'll check this topic again, but I wanted to thank you for posting! You made me cry. Thank you for sharing your daughters story. I'm sure it wasn't an easy thing to do. It's amazing and incredible that one person on a show like 'Grease' can have such an effect on someone that watches them. I'm so happy to hear that god somehow worked through Laura to help your daughter. It's unbelievable the way things workout sometimes. I wish you and your family the best, and will keep you in my prayers. Hope you and your daughter have a fabulious time in New York.

Jane, Laura's Mom
Jane,
Thank you so much for being willing to share your insights and thoughts with us. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to here from Laura and Max personally, but with moving to a new city and the schedules they'll be dealing with I know it would be hard for them. If we can't have them, having a parent talk with us is just as good, maybe better in someways. I assume you were able to meet Max's parents at the show, but maybe not get that close with everything that was happening. If you are in contact with them, please let them know that we'd love to hear from them as well. You talked abut Laura's strong faith in God. I knew it! From the beginning I could tell their was something more than her singing or dancing ability that stood out from the others. The same with Max as well, and that was it. Laura and Max are both blessed to have been raised by such great parents. For me, one thing that stood out in watching them go through the show, was that each time they performed they were able to show us who they really are as a person and not get caught up with the competition and trying to hard. I keep wishing I had grown up in Minnesota or Arizona and had them as friends. I think they would be the greatest friends anyone could ask for. You should be very proud of the job you did as a parent, as I'm sure you are. Thanks again for posting, and keep em coming. May God bless your family always!
I did get to meet Max's parents through the Grease show and they are great people. However, I am not in touch with them now, but I like your idea of having his Mom maybe write here too. I will ask Laura to pass the suggestion on to Max and see if he'll ask his Mom about it. I would enjoy reading her story too!
I've loved reading all your posts and thank you for taking the time to do this. I hope Max's mom will do the same, although she's also chasing a 5 year old and may have her hands full with that.
Both Laura and Max obviously have loving and supportive families who have instilled good values in them. What might be an awesome idea is for you and Max's mom to collaborate on a book, "Bringing up Danny and Sandy" that could give other parents help in bringing up another generation of stars, and what it takes from the parents to help the kids achieve their dreams but still keep their feet firmly on the ground. Might be a best seller next year when the kids take home Tony's...
Laura´s Mom your daughter is amazing, saying that she has crossed oceans, my family and I will be on the first row to enjoy her perfomance straight from Brazil to NY city, and once again, your daughter is blessed with talent, she deserves it, We can´t wait being there on December 13th.
