I guess we will have to make it to TOTC if it makes it to Broadway. Kevin was also one of our family favorites in the show . Also I have never read or seen TOTC. Since it is a classic I bet it is and will be really good.

Go to http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/stage/ny-ettop5379126sep18,0,7159705.story for a review of "Urban Cowboy" at Gateway Playhouse.

With a combative urgency, lanky Daniel Damon Joyce in the Travolta role of cowboy-turned-oil-rigger Bud and Noel Molinelli as the spitfire misnamed Sissy inhabit the match made somewhere other than heaven. Bud wants to own a piece of dirt; Sissy wants to quit Houston, and together they find trailer bliss until barroom bull-broncing gets between them.

Sissy wants to tame the beast and Bud, feeling threatened, walks out while his wife is coached by a black-hat cowboy (John Halbach). Bud retaliates by taking up with a city girl (Kathleen Monteleone) who favors unfaded glitter jeans. They're all so busy "Lookin' for Love in All the Wrong Places" that they forget the example of Uncle Bob and Aunt Corene (Steve Luker and Tina Johnson), even as they sing "Could I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life?"

"Urban Cowboy's" best-of score, updated at Gateway with a new opening song ("Born to Fly"), draws contributions from such Nashville heavyweights as Shania Twain, Travis Tritt and the Charlie Daniels Band.

Anyone going to Bellport to catch Kathleen's performance?

I went to see Kathleen yesterday in Long Island at a regioal theatre in Urban Cowboy. Although the script and the music are not ones that would interest me (I believe that the Broadway show closed in around 5 days?) Kathleeen was as beautiful and believable on stage as she was in the show.
she is so real and her voice was better than I remember. I rode out to the show with her and back to the city and had a wonderful evening. The cast was great as well and the crowd loved them.
It is only there for the month of September, so anyone who can go, should go.

I think I am going to see Chad in Altar Boys on Friday night and Austin and Kate on Saturday.
Julianna's is sold out.

I am seeing Grease tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Yeah!!!

I See London, I See France
September 20, 2007
By Andy Propst

With their new tuner I See London, I See France (subtitled "The Underwear Musical"), book writer and lyricist Vid Guerrerio and composer Jeremy Desmon serve up a generally smart and amiable musical variation on Sex and the City....

Choreographer Warren Adams has created some terrific dances for the show's curvaceous chorus (Whitney Bashor, Juliana Hansen, Mandi Miller).

What a wonderful trip I am having here in NY.

I already told you that I went to see Kathleen and how wonderful she was, I also got to see Chad in Altar Boys. He was great and the entire show was outstanding and funny and wonderful music. I loved it. I am going to have Jack see it the next time he comes out. It was so entertaining.

I saw Ashey in Hairspray last time I was here and she was of course wonderful and this trip I got a chance to see her after one of her shows.

Tonight I went and saw Tully with Austin and Kate. I cannot say enough about how great it was. First, it was a great script, great music and all the performers were incredible actors and singers. Austin is so funny and his voice is like butter. Kate is so incredibly beautiful and her voice is like heaven. They are both really great actors with beautiful stage presence and I just loved the show.

I got to see Jersey Boys and it was really good.

Lastly, but not at all the least, I got to see Grease 3 more times and each time is like seeing it for the first time. I just love watching all the cast perform, but of course one in particular.

What a blessed trip I have had and what a wonderful time I have had with my son. I hate to go home, but I just ichat'd (not a real word?) with a little one who was crying for me to come home.

Sounds like the Broadway trip of a lifetime!  Wonderful to hear about all the performers doing so well and to know you have had quality time with your dear son and vice versa.   Love and care from one's mother is ranked high among life's unforgettable experiences.

Even though Backstage.com's David A. Rosenberg didn't review Tully (in no particular order) very highly, he did offer these comments on Austin and Kate:

...the show takes on a manic quality, as in a madcap soft-shoe number in which Austin Miller, as the swaggering Claude Beautée, lets out all the stops.

Kate Rockwell is a seductive, hedonistic Clodia.

While I was reading the review for "I See London, I See France" at BroadwayWorld.com (only a mention of Juliana)  I clicked on Juliana's name and found this group of photos of most of the other Danny's and Sandy's.  Some very nice photos in here from Gerogia Stitt at Birdland.  I hadn't seen this before, so if someone has already posted the link...sorry.

That's a major coup for Kate. Whether the flick is any good or not it will get a lot of attention because of the popularity of the TV show and its continuous reruns. I wonder who her agent is?

I was in New York last week and saw Kate and Austin. They were obviously more seasoned, better performers than the rest of the cast of "Tully". Austin really rocked the theater with his big number in the second half of the show; it stopped the show. Kate was, well, Kate - beautiful, sultry, sexy, brilliant Kate. I spent some time chatting with them after the show, and it was obvious Austin was glad to out of the YTOTIW straight jackt and able to really show his stuff.

I also saw Julianna in "I See London, I See France", which was the best NYMF show I saw. Julianna played one three chourus members, all very beatiful, sexy women. Julianna was all of sexy and a far better performerm than the other two women. I spet time with her after the show and we enjoyed a great chat together. Television did not do her justice; she much more beaautiful n person!

I sw Kathleen last Wenesday.  She  gave a stellar performance in a small role. She is one of the sweetest people I know, and she was genuinely happy to see me again (as were all of the folks). I did not see her husband Frank on this trip, bit if you ever have the pleasure to meet Frank, you'll understand why Kathleen loves him so much. He is a real prince.

I also reconnected with an old friend from my summer stock days (we shared a dressing room and lived across the hall from each other for a season back in 1979). His name is Joe Kolinski and he has many Broadway credits, including the entire run of "Titanic".

That was my week. Needless to say sleep was an afterthought after seeing so many shows and old and new friends.

Aww, now I'm really sorry I didn't head up. Even when I was talking to you on Saturday night I'd thought about suggesting we meet at the Sage and see if we could get tickets but I decided not to even mention it based on what I'd heard from Austin and others about no seats being available.

I'm really glad you had a great time and I had a great time with you.

"Phantom" starring Kate is not on Broadway. It is for a regional theatre in Westchester, NY. While I believe that my friend Kate SHOULD be on Broadway, this will not be her debut. Hell, Austin derserves to be in a Broadway show as well.

Does anyone know what Allie is up to these days? She is a fabulous performer. The latest news about her I have is from Kathleen Monteleone, who told me she is taking classes and auditioning all over town. Anyone have an update?

I agree that Austin, Kate and kathleen will be starring on Broadway very soon as they are all three very talented. I cant wait to see them when they are.
I think all the contestants on the show will eventually make thier debut. Everyone of them deserves the shot.

...Christine, played by Kate Rockwell, who was one of five finalists from the NBC competition show "Grease: You're the One That I Want."

Polum hopes Rockwell's high profile will bring younger audiences to the dinner theater. He's confident they'll like what they see.

"The startling thing," Polum says, "is that Sandy and Christine are not very similar roles. She came in and started to sing and she has an amazing voice, a beautiful coloratura on top. And I said, 'Why have you never played these roles?' and she said, 'They've never cast me in these roles,' and I said, 'Well, we're going to cast you.' "

"We think she's going to be fantastic. We're very excited about her," he says.

Gelb and his collaborator Stephanie Johnstone (music and lyrics) may be helped by a casting gimmick: Austin Miller and Kate Rockwell, both finalists from the reality television show "Grease: You're the One That I Want," have featured parts.

Miller, who says he's seeking to reshape his doo-wop image, says that his character, Claude Beaute, is "not a vapid pretty-boy sweetie, and that was what was exciting about it." He describes Johnstone's music as "difficult" and "Sondheim-y."

"It's dark and esoteric and all those things, but it's quick and punchy, and I think that we have an opportunity, Kate and I, to impart a little spectacle in the show," says Miller, who lost to Max Crumm for the lead in the Broadway revival of "Grease." "And maybe the marriage of art and spectacle will, you know. . . . "

Musical theater's field of dreams; Some compare it to Sundance. That's high praise for the New York Musical Theatre Festival -- considering it's only 4.

A tale of Two Cities

The production will take the former Putnam County resident from performances in Florida to a stage in New York.

Putnam County native Derek Keeling knew he would have to go through extreme measures to secure the part of Charles Darnay in the pre-Broadway production "A Tale of Two Cities."

So before auditions, he strapped on some custom-made shoes.

In these shoes - Derek's secret weapon to success - the fledgling actor had added inserts and heels to increase his height by about 3 inches.

Another actor, James Barbour, had already been cast as Sydney Carton. In one scene, Charles Darnay, the role Derek was trying out for, has to look like Sydney Carton.

Derek stands a mere 6 feet tall while Barbour is about 6 feet 4.

But with the shoes still on his feet, Derek walked out of the auditions with the job.

Then came the first day of rehearsals.

The show's directors and producers were shocked when Derek walked in and turned out to be the shortest guy in the cast. But all was quickly forgiven when they learned what he had done.

"They loved it that I did that," he said. "Because I did that, I allowed them to not make my height an issue."

Instead, they could focus on Derek's acting and singing, which both surprised and impressed them.

Derek recalled that they told him, "We didn't expect you to come in and do what you did.

"They expected me to have a poppy sound," he said. "They were really surprised that I was able to do the British accent."

Although most people know Derek, 26, for vying for the role of Danny Zuko on the television show "Grease: You're the One that I Want," his strength is actually classical acting and singing.

"It's great," Derek said, referring to his role as Darnay. "This type of theater, this type of singing is what I've been trained to do."

Derek is in Sarasota, Fla., practicing with the entire cast of "A Tale of Two Cities."

Before that, about 20 of the show's main characters were rehearsing in New York.

The first performance will be Oct. 13 at the 500-seat Asolo Repertory Theatre in Florida in front of a select audience. The show will be performed there until Nov. 18 to allow the cast members to perfect their performances.

Half of the tickets to the Florida performances already have been sold. The show's producers expect tickets to sell out by the Oct. 26 opening date.

The show then may move to New York. Producers from some New York theaters will come to watch the show in Florida and decide whether they want to book it.

Most of the show's cast members have performed in five to 10 Broadway shows, a collective experience that Derek finds helpful.

"You really learn a lot by just watching them work," he said.

Being a part of the show's original cast means that Charles Darnay's character is modeled around Derek.

"My shoes are being custom-made for me," he said. "They're tailoring the music to what is best for me. Being in the original cast of the show, I have a chance to develop a character."

Rehearsals have been long - eight to 10 hours Tuesday through Sunday - but well worth it, Derek said.

"It's a very organic process," he said. "Working on the show is amazing."

Derek was a busy man even before his work in "A Tale of Two Cities" and since his appearance on "Grease: You're the One that I Want."

He has been involved in more original works, doing readings in different cities for different shows. Readings are the first step in what could eventually become a Broadway production.

Derek also has appeared in "Don't Quit Your Night Job," which is a comedy show in Manhattan.

He has traveled to different theaters where he used to work.

"It's given me a chance to give back and to sell more tickets for theaters I have worked at before," he said.

And since the TV show, Derek can't go anywhere without being recognized by someone.

The show, which was aired for several weeks last winter, was a competition among actors for the lead roles in a Broadway production of "Grease." Derek made it to the final three actors vying for the role of Danny Zuko.

"If I don't wear a hat and sunglasses, I'll probably be recognized wherever I am," he said.

Derek doesn't mind. He hopes that kind of recognition will attract more people to Broadway shows.

"What's interesting is that I've become a theater actor that's been recognized," he said. "I hope that we're going to bring a new dynamic into the Broadway world."

Derek's parents are still not used to their son's fame.

"It's strange," said Sandi Keeling, Derek's mom. "People just talk to you like they know you."

Derek is a 1999 graduate of Winfield High School. Since his appearance on the "Grease" TV show, he has come back to West Virginia twice - once to appear and sing for a West Virginia Power game.

Derek's parents said they are proud of their son and his accomplishments so far and are grateful for his chance to appear on "Grease."

"We are glad everyone in West Virginia got to see him on the show," Sandi said.

As for Derek's plans, he wants to continue acting in "A Tale of Two Cities" as long as possible. After that he may pursue television.

"Right now my focus is getting this show up and making it the best it can be," he said. "My dream has always been to do Broadway."

For five months, Chad Doreck competed on an NBC reality television show for the chance to go to New York to star in a Broadway revival of "Grease."

The 28-year-old alumnus of Orange County High School of the Arts beat out hundreds of Danny Zuko hopefuls to become one of four male finalists on "Grease: You're the One That I Want." But in March, he was eliminated by the voting home viewers.

Now Doreck's New York dream has become a reality. He's the new star of the off-Broadway hit "Altar Boyz," a musical parody about a boy band. Doreck's first performance was Monday; he replaced the lead, who had injured his vocal cords.

The past month has been a blur for Doreck: He auditioned Aug. 10 for the lead role of Matthew, was told he got the part three days later, moved to New York on Aug. 18 with no place to live (he found an apartment a day later), and had to learn all of the songs and choreography in a whirlwind eight days.

The former Santa Monica resident and voice-over actor does eight 90-minute shows a week.

Q. How does it feel to finally be in New York?

A. It's really fulfilling to aim for something and to achieve it, to be validated for the work you've done and the time you've put in. So many people go through life and aren't able to accomplish their dreams or don't even dare go for them.

Q. What have these past few weeks been like?

A. I must tell you, I did not sleep for the entire rehearsal process. I just had put so much pressure on myself to deliver that I couldn't sleep at night. All I could do was go over the choreography in my brain.

Q. How did opening night go?

A. We got a standing ovation, and it was really wonderful. There was a little bit of messed-up choreography, but nothing that the audience could really tell. The next night, I really focused in again. It was 150 percent improvement.

Q. You arrived in New York just in time to see the winners of NBC's "Grease" reality show open their Broadway show. What did you think of your former competitors' performances?

A. I thought you could tell they had grown a lot. I'm really interested to see how Max (Crumm) is going to grow during this run. I really thought that Laura (Osnes) had a lot of star quality.

Q. How did the "Grease" reality show experience help you?

A. Going through "Grease" was such a huge blessing because there was so much pressure on us and it was so competitive that we had to work really hard and up our game a little bit. We were learning five songs a week with choreography and staging. It was sort of like training ground for "Altar Boyz."
