What a great day for Broadway on Broadway, though it was a bit on the chilly side when the sun hid behind the buildings. The crowd filled up Times Square, though the first 100 people with costumes idea didn't seem to work too well (lack of publicity? lack of people willing to dress up?). The costumed folks filled up the first few rows in front of the stage, and then there was a bit of a rush when they let people from the regular crowds through to fill up the rest of the front area. Dana and I had a relatively unobstructed view in the barricaded section in front of Toys R Us so we opted to stay where we were.
Maxismylove! We spotted you from where we were standing when you arrived in Times Square - hope you and Eris were able to get a good viewing spot. Would've saved you some spots up at the barricade but we lost sight of you in the massive crowd!
Some of the veteran actresses really stole the show today - Adriane Lenox from Chicago, Beth Leavel from the Drowsy Chaperone, Lea Salonga from Les Miz just to name a few. Wasn't feeling the Legally Blonde and Mamma Mia numbers so much. But everyone had a fun time and Lance Bass managed to get the crowd to successfully do the wave a few times. The cast of Grease performed last and stayed around with some of the other later performers to do a sing-along of New York, New York. They all looked like they were having a blast...and finally after a shower of confetti, the audience departed and the performers rushed off to their matinee shows. Such hard workers, and great to see so many people come out to support them!
I actually thought this was one of the weakest Broadway on Broadway's I've been to.
Standing right near Toys R Us (as usual), the sound quality was horrible and, by the end, you could tell the crowd was getting antsy.
I also thought that Summer Nights was a horrible way to end the show (should ahve been You Can't Stop the Beat), though it sounded good enough...when the mics were on, at least.
I just got home a little bit ago and I really had a good time. NYC...you must have been standing right near me because when Maxismylove was outside of Toys R Us she was joining me on the other side of the barricade.
I'll upload some pix later...I'm soooo tired lol

Oh yes, definitely a bunch of audio problems! Especially for the group numbers...seemed like whenever more than 3 people were singing simultaneously, the sound just fell apart. Too bad. No point in having all those mics if only some of them actually amplified any sound (though often at the wrong volume).
(And I'm sure Martin Short was probably a lot more entertaining than Lance...Seth Rudetsky was a riot though.)

haha, I'm sure you were really close. I kept standing on tiptoes to see if I could spot either of you. We were probably 5 people or so behind the front row of the Toys R Us section, all the way to the far right along the barricade. Boy, those fans are popular handouts...not too appropriate for the weather, but they would've come in handy if it were a bit warmer!
I was originally in front of Toys R Us but when the crowd moved to fill in the "Fan Zone" I moved up to the front barricade facing the stage. I was in the third row back from the barricade

Wow, you really were right by us then! We got bumped up a little closer to the front as well when the crowd surged over to the fan zone. Did you see the Miss Piggy puppet? A few of those costumes were pretty impressive...I think the guy who dressed up as Mark from Rent actually got a replica of every article of clothing...some costumes I couldn't figure out, though I forgot how easy it would've been to dress up as one of the Spellers lol. I just realized Spring Awakening would've been fairly easy to pull off too...I would've put on a suit, a tie, maybe a vest, and pulled up my socks to my knees :) (oh and obviously a lot of hairspray or gel to pull off the Moritz look)
The Miss Piggy Puppet was directly in front of where I was standing. I'm surprised you didn't spot me because I had my name on the back of my shirt! lol

OH NO WAY haha...we actually could only see Miss Piggy from where we were standing, Maybe we were actually farther forward than I remember, She (and the puppeteer and his family) was to the left of us and somewhat behind us, so she must've blocked our view of you :)
The cast was there and I'm going to upload my photos later. I'm just so very tired right now
Not all of my photos came out. Every time someone's head got in the way or threw their hand up or something the camera would focus on that instead of what I was trying to get a picture of.

I haven't looked at them all yet but I don't know if any of them came out good enough to use on the sites. Some of them are blurry because people got in the way and messed up the autofocus. When I'm more awake I'll go through them all and see what I have for you.

just wanted to put in my 2 cents on the day. NYC and i had a great spot and although eris is right that the sound quality wasn't very good (or was at least uneven) and the sun spent more time behind buildings and big, puffy clouds, the spirit of the event was awesome. really lovely. i've lived in ny all my life (1000 years;)) and i've never done a times square event like this. it was just a great ny happening and i was glad i got up at the crack of dawn to be there;)
i agree with NYC's assessment of the show stealers and the numbers that were lost on me, but i was really excited to see the 'grease' cast and loved that they closed out the day. laura and max both sounded great (and max was dancing up a storm and totally kicking it; soooo comfortable in front of a crowd of, what, 50,000 did they say?!) but for me, just seeing max on the jumbotron as part of the whole thing simply rocked. and somehow seeing them both do 'new york, new york' -- laura as part of a kick-line w/her female co-starts and max rocking out in full voice, mic in hand, clearly taking in every bit of the experience -- was even better.
Broadway World video is up. It takes a while to load. I am still waiting... Some nice clips, but nothing from "Grease" on it. I was hoping it would show a little of the closing...
Photo coverage is also up on Broadway World. More have been added so there are quite a few on the site. Here are a couple of the Grease and the New York New York number photos: Photos
Thanks Kait....that was really fun. Laura sounds great as usual....Max is so sexy when he sings low like that. He really does seem to like to put on a show..it was so much fun to watch...just as good as being there.
Lance Bass, Max Crumm, Tamyra Gray, Marin Mazzie, Laura Osnes, Chazz Palminteri, Lea Salonga, and a slew of stars entertained the Times Square crowds at the annual Broadway on Broadway concert.
Ray, The URL I listed should lead you to a YouTube taping of "Summer Nights" at Broadway on Broadway. You'll have to cut and paste into your address bar, because for some reason I can't figure out how to make my link clickable.
I ended up not attending the flea market. I decided to stay home and watch the Indians clinch the AL Central. I'm crying as I write this because I am just so very excited. One of my favorite people was standing on that field today and seeing him finally get into the play offs has excited me so very much. I just wish I could have been there with him. I'll just have to wait until Tuesday when I see him in Seattle to give him a HUGE hug.
The Indians beat the Oakland A's 6-2. Grady Sizemore went 4-4 with a triple, Jake Westbrook went 7 strong innings with a career high nine strike outs. And my buddy Jason went 1-3 with an RBI ground out, a single, a run scored, and a walk.
