The London production is a revival of the version that ran in the mid-90s.

I had the pleasure of speaking with David Ian at the first preview performance night. I first thanked him for bringing grease back to Broadway and also the fact that I liked how it was toned down in the sense that it wasn't over done into a Vegas-style show much like the music from the previous 1994 revival. I asked him ( not knowing at the time that the current London production had been running from 1993 to now, with a recent recast done in a reality competition show much like "You're the One that I Want") what was the difference between the Broadway version and the London version? His answer was "The London version is less real". More lights, glitz, glamor and fantasy than bringing you into a 50's setting like the current Broadway production does.
