I am a long time Grease fan. I watched the NBC show religiously and was so very excited to see the show with the two kids we the audience chose.
I honestly was very dissapointed. Max and Laura were very good, but Max is NOT a convincing Danny. He is not a "leader of the pack" type person. The rest of the cast was mediocre at best. I felt like I was watching a high school production.
I am hoping for the show's sake that this was an isolated incident and that the cast were a little off this night.
Contrary to dg, I never had the slightest interest in, or much awareness of, "Grease", until Max burst upon the scene.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating....I loved this show...LOVED it. I had not seen a Broadway show since "The Producers" (w/ Lane/Broderick, of course), and while I certainly enjoyed it, "Grease" provided a whole other magnitude of theatrical involvement and emotion.
Unlike many, I loved the look of the show...the colors, the scenery, the costumes. I loved the unpretentious style of acting. Some of them were too old, but so what...the show had so much heart, it didn't matter. And those wonderful songs had all the passion and exuberance that one could ask for.
A major bone of contention has been Max's suitability, or lack thereof, to be the leader of a pack of four aimless goofballs. I had no such problem, as I had long ago accepted him as the most unconventional leading man I had ever seen. His talent, intelligence and heart are so immense that his mere presence on stage or screen is cause for celebration.
So, there you have it, an opposite reaction to the same stimulus.
Disappointed Greaser: Read "Thoughts on the Reviews," by NYC 9758, Aug. 20, 2007, for an enlightened treatise and comprehensive critical analysis of the show including Max as "leader of the pack" for a new generation. A win on national television, a direct result of competing among thousands from across the U.S., support by millions of votes, selection by experienced producer/directors, love from fans on this board and others, and sustained ticket sales is sufficient proof of success.
Disappointed, thanks for sharing your opinion. Many on this board are unswayable, as we are all devoted fans of both kids. (I think many people form their own opinions about shows/performers/politicians and read reviews more for entertainment than for advice.)
I may be a Max fan BECAUSE he is an atypical leading man. Those conventional 'leader of the pack' types get on my nerves. My HS and college 'packs' would've welcomed and followed Max, recognizing that he'd have us laughing every time he graced us with his presence.
Jo and Ray and Kait, I so agree with your responses. Well said. DG, I just wanted to add that Max, for me, really does transform himself into Danny. I guess it would depend on your perception of "leader of the pack". In my opinion, he has interpreted this role and put his own spin on it. For me, I wouldn't have seen this show if Max had not won the role (even though I am a big fan of Laura's, Max has the "it" factor that drew me in). He is doing his job and adding his own unique and wonderful style to this role that could really be one dimensional. ( See they told you none of us could be swayed!!)
I was in High School in the 50's and I chose Max as "my Danny" from the very first television show. Many disagreed with me because they didn't think he had "the look", but I held my guns and in the end I was rewarded with the public confirming my choice. He definitely would have been the "leader of the pack" in my hometown! He has the talent, the stage presence, and the acting and dancing ability to go far and I plan to follow his career for many years to come. I am also a huge Laura fan and will follow her also as the years go by!
