Grease Proposal Ideas
Permalink Closed

Hello to all! Im new to the forum, but it seems very informative so I guess Ill start here!

Ok, well I have finally decided that I think it is time! I have been with my Girlfriend for 5 years now, and my son loves her like a mom.

She is a HUGE grease fan, and for Christmas I would like to fly her to New York and take her to the show. This may be a perfect time to pop the question.

Deos anybody have any good ideas on how I should do it? It would be great to do it at the show, but Im not sure if that would work out.

Also, ticketmaster gives me options for tickets in
Orchestra M 17-19 and MEZZ G 2-4

Any suggestions for seating?

As stated in previous posts by many, any seat in the house is a good one. If you want to see everything all at once, better the top level seats. If you are going for a close up of Max and Laura, The lower front rows are good, although there are more of the rest of the cast in the play than Max and Laura. Enjoy the show.

Well thats good! I have been to some shows where you have a better view of the performers backstage then in front, so Im glad that it is set up good.

Thanks for the reply.

Oh, boy. As far as the more important part of your post -- popping the question -- I haven't been to a Broadway show and can't answer as to how that will work. I'm thinking that perhaps it could be the topper to a divine evening. Perhaps after the show and any stage-dooring you might do, you could take her to a memorable restaurant or landmark and ask her there? Or would she want it to be a very public proposal, such as at the actual show? If you were to do so at the show itself, I'd think you'd want to let the theater managers know.

Well she would be thrilled if I did it at the show. I just dont know where to start with setting something like that up. I mean, I see it all the time on TV at Baseball games and stuff, but who do you contact?

I guess I would have to call the theater itself and find out. I appreciate your help!

If that deosnt work out, I would like to make it really memorable...something alittle better then the typical dinner proposal. But I have time to plan this, so we will see!

Thanks!

Maybe you could get Max or Laura to hand her a note at the stage door with your proposal in it.  Another possibility would be to see if Laura's husband Nate would do it, since Max and Laura may be super busy.  After all, they just went through their own wedding and should still be "in tune" with romantic offerings--they might even get a kick out of it.

Oooooooooooh, I like that, very creative!  That would be very cool if it could be done at the tail end of the show, having the cast sing the proposal or something, ha ha.  Or hold up signs, etc.  THAT would be something you'd never forget!  For Jkloese:  The show is fantastic, I promise you are going to have a great time!!!!  I just love everyone's voices, they blew me away.  Funny enough, with the movie, I really can't stand "Hopelessly Devoted To You" (I tend to fast forward through it, it's too slow for me)  But hearing Laura sing it, was UNBELIEVABLE----such an outstanding voice and she performed it so well.  It's one of the songs I cannot wait to hear on the soundtrack!!!!  I am jealous of you for getting to see it, I'm trying to plan out when I can go again.  Best wishes to you and your future fiancee smile  Dana

Well I like the one to one, up close and personal proposals myself but I'm not the one getting asked so...if you have your heart set on a public proposal the first thing to do is to make sure she is gonna say yes. There is not much worse that asking a pretty girl to marry you and then she goes and says no in front of everyone.  I'll assume you got that covered. Now it is gonna be Christmas time so she 's gonna have a pretty good idea what you are up to being that Christmas is a favorite time for a girl to get a ring...you do have a ring I hope. So you have to do something to throw her off track. You can't tell her it's a vacation or anything like that...maybe your aunt can get (fake) sick or something and you all have to leave for NYC within the hour. She will be so mad that your aunt is ruining Christmas she will forget all about the ring she is expecting.
Now for the proposal itself. I like the doing it at Grease idea. You can ask them if they would say...ask a couple of random people up to the stage...say you and your girlfriend...and ask 'How's are you enjoying the show., or What brings you to Grease?" Then they can turn to to you and ask, "Do you have any questions?" and you can say, "Yes, will you marry me?" You get the drift.

Say though that the Grease people are not too hot on that idea. You can go over to Radio City and see if they have any interest in that sort of thing during their Christmas Spectacular. Now it's not Grease but it is in tune with the whole Christmas motif.

If you are planning an early trip to the city, say around December 7 th or so when they light the tree in Rockerfeller  Center you may be able to convince one of the networks carrying it to to film you popping the question. They do it all the time on New Year's Eve so maybe they will do it then.

But now let's get to the really important question. Where should you sit? I would not sit in any of those seats. I'd get right on e-bay and buy seats front and center. Or on stubhub. Now December seats are not for sale yet ( mostly) by the scalpers but they will be. I've been following this. The good seats from the scalpers go on sale about a month before the date that the show will go on. You can get tickets that are way underpriced to those that are way overpriced depending on how lucky you get. It isn't even that much of a gamble that you will get better seats than the ones you said, at a good price. But even if you have to pay top dollar...ain't she worth it!!

Good luck and God Bless.

Wow!

I really love all the responses you guys gave. Very Helpful! Great Ideas.

I know she will say yes, so that wont be a problem. I do have a ring, so that problem is solved already. She is a teacher, so I will probably have to go after Christmas when she has time off. Maybe even the first week of January. I dont have dates set yet.
I dont think I want to be on TV doing it, but  in front of the crowd at the theater will be good.
I dont think she will pick up on the proposal idea, we had a New York trip planned once before but some things came up and we didnt make it. So I was going to suprise her with the trip and the show tickets, which I have done before. She gets so excited over just the trip, she wont even think about me proposing.

Now with all these great ideas, where do I start? Should I call the theater itself and talk to a manager, or wait till I get there and try and sneak away to speak to someone in person?

Thanks for the seat ideas as well...Ill wait till it gets closer to the date before I purchase and see if I can get a couple on ebay. I just get worried about being scammed.

Thanks again everybody!

hi there -

i actually walk by the theater on my way to work and work in the neighborhood, so if you want someone to go by and talk to the box office person, i'm totally willing to help in the name of l-o-v-e!  i think it's really hard to call the box office itself.  if memory serves, the numbers advertised are for ticketmaster, not the box office itself, but i might be wrong.

anyway, if you want to tell me exactly what to ask, exactly what you'd want, i'm happy to help. i can even see if something like this has ever been done in a theater before -- the box office folk might have the 411 on that and if whoever is man-ing or woman-ing the booth is nice (or a romantic), they might share what they know.  of course, it's possible that i'll be blown off, but it's worth a try.

Try contacting the stage manager. Write him a letter. Info (as to who it is) can be found on the show's website.

This is for Dana  (great name, ha ha ha) in NYC------oooooh, I just read your post, and I am so jealous that you get to walk past the theater every day!!!!  I was just out in NY and loved every second of it biggrin  Do you work in Times Square?  I just love that whole theater district area, so full of energy, wow!!  I NEED to go back there---I have to see GREASE again!!!!!!!  You are so nice to offer to help with the whole proposal thing too!  Hope you're having a nice evening, just wanted to write in....take care!

Dana...Im shocked to hear that you will actually help with this! Glad to know there are still people like you in this world. You dont know how appreciative I am about that. If its really not that much trouble for you, you would definetely be a HUGE help if you could ask about it for me. I just need a direction, even a good phone number and a name would help. The website just gives ticket info, so I might have a hard time calling.

What Im thinking is before or after the show, somehow having attention drawn to us by the cast. Then thats when I would ask her. She would be so suprised. I dont want to draw too much attenion away from the show itself, but still be memorable. It would be even better if Laura or Max could just come up to her and just hand her a note, and while she was reading it I would pull out the ring, but I know that those guys must be super busy before the show.

Thank you so much Dana! Even if they just blow you off, you are still one of the best people Ive met, just for trying!!

hi there dana!  nice to meet you:)

i work just south of the theater district and walk to work from the upper westside so go right past all the theaters every day.  the theater district itself is fun to have in the 'hood, though a bit crowded after work, LOL.  i don't work IN the theater industry, i work for an adult ed. creative writing school and our office is on 38th st.  our building has theater-oriented offices in it, like the company that did the grease costumes!  i saw laura and nate the day she did her fitting RIGHT IN MY LOBBY and rode up in the elevator w/them!  i almost passed out when i saw them but managed to keep my composure and have a chat as we rode up.  they were sooooo sweet!  and i've seen max in the neighborhood a bunch and he is darling!!!

i've seen the show twice and am a bit bummed that i don't have a plan to go again.  might have to remedy that!  if you make it to the big apple again, we should meet!  it'll be a dana reunion!!!

anyway, glad you reached out!  great to meet you:)

i might message you again w/some more questions/details but we'll say that friday will be the day!

again, really happy to help!  let's cross all our digits and see what we can do!

ok, i was thinking (and i'm posting this rather than messaging you b/c i assume anyone looking at this thread at this point is invested in your idea's success!) that trying to get anything to happen in the theater as part of the show might be a tough sell.  before the show, i'd imagine no one would want max and laura to 'reveal' themselves to the audience so that their entrance packs the required punch (not to mention they probably each have their before-curtain regimens, nerves to deal with, and who knows what else) and after the show, they need to get backstage and change so that they can meet their fans at the stage door.  sooooooo, what i was thinking was, if i could get to speak to the stage manager, i could ask if there were any way to get max and laura in on the proposal and do it on the street at the stage door.  you can plan to wait outside the stage door like everyone else -- which your girlfriend would not find strange and probably be on board with --  and when it came time to ask for your program to be autographed, max or laura could say to your girlfriend 'oh, i hear you're getting married soon' and she'd look at you and you could drop down on one knee in front of all the other fans and max and laura and do your thing!

would that do it in your mind?  any other variation of something similar feel better to you?  i just think i might have a better shot w/the stage manager if the idea being presented didn't 'interfere' (and i mean no disrespect to the proposal by calling it an interference!) with the show itself.

and if that doesn't work, i wonder if anyone else on this forum who is closer to either max or laura might be able to get them on board without involving the theater people.  that's an idea if i strike out, assuming you're ok w/this direction.

i'll come back onto the forum later tonight or tomorrow morning to see what you say.  and any others out there, tell me what you think of the approach or, by all means, improve on it!

this is getting exciting!

Dana,
Thats sounds perfect, I dont think it needs any improving! You are exactly right with with everything, and thats what I had a hard time trying to figure out. I didnt want to take away from the show itself, and I wasnt sure when the cast would be busy, but it sounds perfect to do it waiting for an autograph!! I know she will want that for sure, so it would be the best time.

I just want to make it memorable, it deosnt have to be in the theater, or on stage or anything like that. I really love the idea that you have.

I really hope we can make this work, your a huge help!

good!  glad it makes sense to you.  i'll go by there this afternoon and see who i can talk to but i don't think contacting one of the board members who are related to max or laura is a bad option.  especially since it won't be an 'in theater' thing.

and if it can't happen that way, i'll give you my personal email addy, you can write a note to max or laura, asking if they could/would be in on the proposal, and i can leave it at the stage door or at the box office to give to the house manager.  we'll just have to decide whether to get them involved and on-board before you get tickets or after (giving a date.)  too much in advance and i'd worry they won't remember.  maybe someone else wants to weigh in at that point.

ok.  will report back later:)

In the mean time if there is anybody on here that might know max and laura and are willing to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to Dana and all the other responses.

ok, i went by the box office this afternoon and spoke to the gentleman there.  he didn't exactly look at me like i had three heads but he didn't have a lot of help to give, nice as he was about it.  he did give me the phone number of the 'grease' press office, which i guess is both 'press' and 'public relations'.  the number is 212-398-1800.  he didn't have a name to give, unfortunately.  btw, i also knocked on the stage door, but no one came out immediately and i started to feel conspicuous, so i didn't stay too long.  sorry:(

soooooo, you could give a call, try to get to talk to the show's press agent or publicity manager, and make your pitch to them, saying that if max and laura would participate in your proposal in some way, it might actually be good press for the show (not that it needs it but...)  after all, part of the plotline of 'grease' -- problematic as the whole of it might be on a bunch of more modern levels -- is a love story, so, in the name of 'L-O-V-E'...

HOWEVER, i still think trying to get something to happen at the stage door might still be your better bet and i'll message you privately with some thoughts on that.  as i said before, it wouldn't disrupt the show, which the producers and press agent/public relations person might be sensitive about, and might be the most organic way to make something happen.  true, you'd be asking max/laura to 'act' a little, but hey, that's what they do, right?!

sorry i didn't come back with the perfect contact person and resounding support from the box office guy but this ain't dead yet!!!

thoughts?

Hi again Dana!  Thanks for replying to my message---it's so nice to meet a fellow Dana :)  I have to tell you how lucky you are to be in that fun area, day after day.....I was in NY a few weeks back, and just LOVED the whole energetic feeling!!!!!  My sister and I are planning a return trip, possibly for next May---I just HAVE to see this show again, preferably with Laura and Max biggrin  Yes, that would be SO fun to meet up!  Are you a native New Yorker?  Do you love your job?  Do you live in an apartment?   I don't mean to get so personal, it's just that I'm so in awe of anyone who gets to live and work in that great city!!!  There is SO much to do, I bet you never get bored.  And oh!  I can't believe you got to chat with Laura and Nathan---how fun, I'm sure they were just as nice as can be, that is beyond cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Are you going to the Virgin store performance and signing by the cast in a few weeks?  Ooooh, you are so lucky to just get to go to things like that!
Well, I hope you're having a fun morning in the Big Apple, take care!!

Not to take away from the NY Dana's answers, but let me just say....

Every now and then, as a native New York City-er, I get jaded. Having to dodge people who are looking at the buildings? Annoying. Getting stuck at don't walk signs because there are too many tourists in front of me? Also annoying.

Yet, every now and then, there are the people who ask me how to get somewhere, and I take them, and their enthusiasm echoes yours, MN Dana, and I realize...I'm luckier than I've ever imagined.

Glad you enjoyed your trip and come back soon.

Awwww, thank you Mr. E----may I also say that I enjoy your posts?  You are so knowledgeable, I always learn something.  Do you go to alot of Broadway shows yourself?  I know if I lived out there, I would try and get to as many as I could, I know they are not cheap.  You know, when I as out in the Big Apple, we had a "lost tourist" moment, and out of the blue, a very nice guy (native New Yorker, I presume) took the time to help us out, it was very much appreciated.  I don't know why some people say New Yorkers are rude, mean, abrupt, etc., everyone we met was as nice as could be.....maybe it was YOU who gave us directions, Mr. E smile  Well, I hope you are having a nice weekend!

I do manage to get to the theater a lot - I'm very fortunate...I refuse to pay "real" prices - I always manage to find terrific discounts.

Maybe I did help you out...I do enjoy giving directions...I'm going for my tour guide's license in my spare time.

The whole "rude people" thing is an out of hand stereotype. After 9/11 everyone got this huge sense of community.

hi dana minnesota --

nice to hear back from you.  i echo mrE1111 in that i feel very fortunate to live here in nyc and, yes, i'm a native manhattanite.  i lived in the philly area for college and lived in LA for a couple of years in the 90's but i'm my most comfortable, my best 'me' here.  i do live in apt. on the upper westside near central park (have lived in different apts. in the same basic neighborhood for most of my life; my parents are/were native nyers too) and like apt. life a lot.  i don't know that i could do the suburbs b/c it's so convenient to be able to walk down the street for a pint of ice cream at 1am without having to deal w/the car.  as to my job, i like it a lot.  i'm a screenwriter (unproduced though i've been lucky enough to win some contests and get good feedback on my work) so having a day job at a creative writing school where i get to talk to flegling writers every day and get to work with our talented published/produced teachers is great.  could i make more money?  yup!  but it's a good gig for a creative person who prefers stability to the 'freelance' lifestyle that actors and dancers and painters lead.  i also teach yoga privately, which has been a blessing  b/c it's so beneficial and it's so great to see how people are helped by my doing something that i love to do (i keep hoping that max and laura will be trying to find a yoga teacher and they'll somehow get wind of me, LOL).  and it gives me a little extra income which doesn't hurt in this city.  if i had more 'disposable income', i'd surely go to more theater but i don't, so i tend to be very picky about what i see.  i will probably go to the virgin store event if it doesn't conflict w/stuff and will keep my eyes open in the neighborhood for max and laura sitings.  i only saw laura that once; have seen max a few times and he's always an incredible sweetheart.

i do hope you and your sister make it back this spring.  that's one heckuva season to see this city!

:)...dana

good for you, mrE1111!  i love hearing about folks trying yoga for the first time, whether i'm teaching or not!  i came to yoga thru running and couldn't believe how rigorous it was, so i guess it depends, like everything, on perspective.

keep it up!:)

hey --

i had a feeling you might've been with your g-friend this weekend but no worries whatsoever!  i think waiting a bit is a good idea, esp. if you're talking about coming after the holidays (if you're thinking during the holidays, i'd do something soon since a million other things could get into everyone's consciousness around then!)  i'd be really surprised if you didn't get a little help from the proper 'powers that be' but if  you need any further help, don't hesitate to reach out to me.  but definitely keep me looped on what's going on with the whole plan.  heck, i'm invested in this already!

be well and 'speak' soon,

Hello jkloese,

Here is a way to communicate directly with Max and Laura privately. They both have MySpace accounts. If you have one, search for them by name, and send each one a message containing your proposal idea and enlisting their help.

Go straight to the people involved, and don't waste you time with press agents, stage managers, etc. As former actor, I was always more receptive to this type of thing when it was brought directly to me.

They are both really great, friendly people and will probably try to find a way to help. Let me know if you need help contacting them. Good luck!

Pete

Thanks pete. That sounds like a good idea too. I did speak with laura's mom and she sort of told me this will be difficult because of how busy they are going to be. And of course the logistics of them knowing who I am. At the stage door there will be alot of people trying to get to see them, so it might be difficicult.

I dont have a myspace, but maybe one of my friends that deos will be willing to help out and I can get in contact with one of them directly, just to see how they feel about it, and if there is any chance that it could still happen.

hmmmm....I still feel good about trying, and if it deosnt work out...she will still be happy when i ask her, no matter where we are.

thanks everybody!

If you want to get engaged in NYC, why not go to The Top of the Rock and propose there.  They do have photographers there and you could have your picture taken while proposing.  Just a thought.

Well I thought I would check in...its about 1 month out till we are in NYC and watching the show!

Ive been really thinking about how I am going to ask the question...and seeing how unpredictable the business is with the strike and everything else...I think Im going to find another way to ask. It would have been a dream for her if it worked out, but Laura's mom explained how tough it would be to get it right, and how easily it wouldn't work.

So Im still up for suggestions, if anyone has any. Im thinking that Ill just have to stick to the traditional nice dinner and proposal thing.

Has anyone ever been to Gordon Ramsey's "The London"...I heard it really nice, but if anyone has any thoughts Id like to hear.

jkloese,

The one thing that I thought of is trying to set it up with one of the cast members to hand your girlfriend something (a note with the proposal) at the stage door after the show ended. You could wear some off the wall color (purple shirt with a red tie) to make you stand out?!?!? If you do anything before the show, she will not stay focused enough to watch the show (due to excitement overload). It sounds easy enough and not time consuming for a cast member to do. It would probably even work with one of the bouncers too!! She would always connect the proposal with Grease on Broadway.

I wish you luck!! I wanted to be proposed to in Disney World by the castle, but my husband said he didn't do it because I was expecting it there.

That would be perfect. And thats pretty much how I expected it to be. The problem was, that sometimes the fans cant get close enough to them at the stage door, and the bouncers are trying to keep the cast in and out pretty quickly..according to Laura's mom. And I have heard of times when they werent even able to come out to meet the fans for some reason.

It would also be tough to dress like that too...I mean she might make me change before we leave the hotel if I go Purple shirt with Red tie...lol!

Im not exactly sure how to contact any of the cast members directly, to even ask. Like I said before, I have spoke with Laura's mother, and she explained the difficulty of doing it this way.

Laurasmom...if your reading this, please feel free to chime in!!

I understand!! I think I was just playing out a proposal that would top mine (the one that didn't happen the way I had imagined it).

My husband would never wear anything that doesn't match, but he sometimes wears sports teams shirts that I would never pick out!?!?!

Also, the day that we went, there were some people dressed to the T, beautiful gown and tux. They got to go backstage. I haven't been to many broadway shows, so I wasn't sure what made them so special. But I was really envious!!

Over the years, the "dress code" for theater has been more and more casual. If someone was wearing a gown or tux, it may mean they were going someplace special before or after or had no idea that many people wear flip flops and shorts to the theater.

I like to dress decently, but in the heat of the summer, I have worn shorts and sandals to the theater. After all, the audience has not come to see me, but the actors on the stage. I am there, in the dark, participating in the best form of entertainment, live theater.

Well I did plan on wearing a nice suit, seeing that it is going to be a special night. Now if I could just figure out how to get backstage....that would complete my plan...lol.

Well I have a month now to figure everything out, so maybe a miracle might happen and I get a good contact on the inside to hook me up....but if not...it will still be very special!!

Please conatct me in a private messgae and I will send you my email and my cell phone number. If I have enough notice, I can speak to Max or Laura ahead of time and set it up.

jkl,
Just wanted to weigh in another female viewpoint. I was just thinking that if your Plan A doesn't work out, I was thinking that the Central Park Carriage ride thing would be pretty cool. You could think of a creative way to slip the ring out and surprise her along the way or at some interesting spot. Just a thought, a more intimate setting but just as memorable!! All cozied up under the blankets......The driver could be your photographer after pop the question. Also wouldn't take any planning or stress if things fall through. Although I guess it would depend on the weather and your tolerance for cold!!

BTW...I was able to get AA seats...so we will be right in front (Hopefully not too close!) That should be pretty exciting for her. I asked her if she would like the front or not and she said she would love it...so its nice that I was able to get front row (well almost front row, AAA werent available).

AA seats are better than AAA seats which really are a bit too close as you dont see some of the things on stage or the orchestra. Also the actors sort of are looking past you when you are that close, rather than at you.

I was wondering about that...I mean even at a movie theater...you dont want front row seats. Someone on here told me that all the seats are pretty good so it didnt really matter, so I didnt worry too much. Thanks for headsup greatwhiteway!
