I, too, hope if Max took a night off it was for R&R and not because of illness. My favorite university professor allowed one absence per semester without requiring a sick excuse -- she called it a mental health day. I adored that woman. Max is 21, after all, and we don't know if perhaps the absence was scheduled or written into his contract. And then of course, he may have been sick.
It is in rather poor taste for me to comment on something I know nothing about nor is quite my business but I also rather Max is suffering from a temporary yet benign illness, or an emergent obligation, which prevents him from performing in the way he is required. Anything else would seem more ominous.
I apologize for expressing a personal opinion which is really none of my business. I am certain that Max would never engage in any type of unprofessional behavior. After observing how physically taxing it is during the performance, my immediate reaction was to empathize and advocate for R & R.
That is totally understandable, Jo. His role is very physically demanding and he has such a huge mental responsibility as the lead. I know we all just wish him and the rest of the cast much success.
I don't believe that Mr.E is rattling our cages just for fun. He probably has reliable source information, and I agree that I would much prefer that Max was physically/mentally unable to perform.
While technically his name is not above the title, in essence it is. Personally, if I travelled all the way to New York and got Max's understudy, no matter how good, it would be the end of the world.....well, not really.
My source is reliable, not to worry. I wouldn't make this up, knowing that his parents frequent this message board.
From what I understand, the refund line wasn't terribly long, despite numerous signs on the doors. The understudy, Matt Hydzek, even got entrances applause, I've heard.
Please don't think me ignorant...I know nothing about Broadway, but I thought his understudy was listed as Josh Franklin? Do they have more than one understudy? I'd be interested to know more about the understudies and how they keep up with a role when they don't play it every night.
It's probably not good for people to jump to conclusions on why he called out. Throwing out guesses about him wanting some rest could put him in a bad light and we don't want to do that.
There are 2 "Danny Zuko" understudies - Franklin and Hydzek. Hydzek is also a swing, an cast member who learns all of the male parts so he can go on as any character or in any ensemble track. Can't say why Franklin didn't go on, perhaps he wasn't comfortable in the role, or was covering a different ensemble track.
There is a mandatory understudy rehearsal with the stage manager at least once every week. Most understudies get some notice before they go on, say, for example, a cast member has a vacation. That understudy will find out when he's going on sometime in advance. But if a cast member calls in sick, the person could find out right at the half hour call.
Hell, an understudy could go on following the intermission.
Another tenor had to be replaced on Saturday night.....uptown at The Met. The young hunk slated to play Romeo came down with a cold that took out his high notes. The understudy was ready for the break of a lifetime, when management decided that the full house of 3800 (imagine!) deserved a star....and they had one available. The story made the New York Times Music Section.
The understudy that replaced Max played Danny in another production so he had experience.

They say that I won't last too long on Broadway I'll catch a Greyhound bus for home, they all say But they're dead wrong, I know they are 'Cause I can play this here guitar And I won't quit till I'm a star on Broadway
I know of quite a few actors who played roles in regional productions of shows and then got parts in different productions which played the main stem....they weren't hired because they did the roles before.

Are you trying to tell me they needed Max Crumm at The Met Saturday night? lol! I would definitely classify him as a Romeo!
OK, you guys, here is the real inside scoop on why Max missed Saturday night's performance. You all should have known that Max would NEVER let his fans down if he could help it!
Max injured his ankle over a month ago and has been getting physical therapy. He re-injured it during the Friday night show, did the Saturday matinee and the physical therapist would not let him go on for the evening show. He got more therapy iced, wrapped and put it up all night and then did both shows yesterday. It had to be answered prayer that he was able to perform on Sunday becasue you should have seen it on Saturday after the first show. He sat in his apartment worrying about the fans and how they would react and talked about "they are doing this number right now" and so on.
Thanks for the info... how did you find that out? (Just wondering because I'm curious... if you don't want to say anything, that's ok... just figured I'd ask )
Thanks for posting that but it is so hard to hear that he is injured. I can't imagine how worrisome it is and how difficult it must be to be sidelined. Bravo to him for going on with the show but if you do have a line to him have him take care of himself first.
Thanks for letting us know. I was sure that Max had a good reason. I sent him a MySpace message though to tell him I was concerned. Thanks again. When I pray for Max I'll add an extra one for his ankle.
from what i've heard, he is doing much better now.
I'll take that as gospel.
Injury was my only concern when I first heard that his role had a lot of dancing. Dancers are athletes, and all athletes, from football players to figure skaters, are subject to injury at any moment.
Well, now it has happened and he's recovering, and he'll know better how to avoid injury in the future. I'll be glad when he's out of harm's way and doing what he was born to do...ACT.
Hi Friends. Laura had text messaged me late Saturday afternoon that Max hurt his ankle and was going to be out for the Saturday night show. She was nervous for the change and also concerned about Max. But the show went just fine and Laura said Matt, the understudy, did a really fine job. As you know Max was able to be back on Sunday. He would have been able to rest his ankle yesterday (Monday) and also today until this evening's show so hopefully that helped a lot. It's a rigorous show and hard on the body--especially for the guys. And it is hard to let an injury fully heal when you have to work it so hard every day. Anyway, don't question Max's devotion! He is as committed and hard working on this show as we all have always believed. Also, just for interest sake, I have learned union regulations state both Max and Laura are entitled to a week vacation after six months of work so at SOME point I would think they may each take a turn to rest a little. I know that will be a hard choice and will be hard for the fans but they both want to work lots of years in this industry and that will require taking good care of themselves. I'm sure we all think alike on this issue--"just don't let them take off when I get to see the show," right? That's a tough issue and I don't really know how the theatre will choose to handle it. Any thoughts from anyone?
In the case of Max and Laura, as 2 actors in an open-ended run, they are guaranteed a week of vacation after 6 months, though they don't necessarily have to take it. They can choose to keep performing and they get a nice checky when they leave the show with their vacation salary. That's just the basic idea, as I don't have much time to post the specifics.
I'll say this - if they want long, lengthy careers (and I'm above and beyond sure they both do), they better have voice doctors and therapists (physical and mental) on speed-dial. There are many haphazards that come with performing on Broadway - from sprained bones that don't heal right to busted vocal chords/vocal cord nodes, polyups, etc., that, if left unchecked, can lead to dangerous consequences.
Regarding what the theater would do if/when they're absent, I'm sure it will be announced in advance if they schedule a vacation. The theaters are required by Equity to post signs if a person is absent in 2 spots of their choosing - on a board inside the theater lobby, on a slip in the Playbill, an announcement before the show, or a sign on the door. Since Max and Laura are the "stars," despite not being above the title, patrons are elligible to get a refund or exchange the tickets. However, since so many people are coming in from out of town to see the show, I can't imagine they'd want one, since I don't think they'd have the opportunity to see it again.
Well I hope you are right Mr. E. about having to give refunds if Max or Laura are not there. I love Grease, have seen it in every incarnation which includes having seen the movie every time it has been on TV in the last 25 years. I want to go see it again but would only want to see Max and Laura. If I could be guarenteed a refund if one of them were out I would go again in a heartbeat....because I am going to GREASE to see Them act. When I go to Jersey Boys, and Wicked I don't care who plays what part, all those actors will be equal to me.
the show IS intense on the body-especially in Greased Lightning, when they pretty much start doing pushups in the middle of the song. haha/that takes skills

Max singing French opera! What a thought! lol
He is definitely a Romeo, though, and it got me imagining him as Shakespeare's Romeo. I wonder if Max has any classical leanings. Romeo is a teenager in love, not all that different from Danny, except that he speaks in old English.
I just wanted to say thank you to Laura's mom for caring enough to post here, it was really nice of you to set the record straight and keep Max's image perfect. I'm sure he was very sad to miss that show and his new fans. I hope his ankle heals well and in record speed. Thanks again Jane (Laura's dear sweet Mother) You must be so PROUD!!!
Yes, but I think it is so sweet of Laura's mom to give her perspective on things. It is very special that she takes the time to post here and I really value what she has to say it is like the "ULTIMATE" inside scoop.
