The only members of the cast that were there were Max, Laura, Robyn, Patrick, Matthew, Jose, and Lindsay. There also wasn't much of a crowd. I'd say less than 50 people showed up to actually watch the performance.
This really wasn't what you would call a free signing. Yeah, you didn't have to pay extra to get your CD signed but in order to be allowed in line you had to buy the cd there. I already had bought a CD for Marjory near where I work and I brought that CD with me. Well, I had to buy another if I wanted any autographs. So I went and bought another after the performance because they wouldn't let me in line. I was none too pleased.
I was standing near the escalator for the performance and one of the security guards had me move. So I stood where I was told to stood and another security guard said I couldn't stand there. So I stood where HE told me to stand. Then yet another guard had me move again. This time I said "I'm standing where I was told to stand".
It was hard to take pictures during the performance because it wasn't bright enough for pictures to come out. You'll be able to see how dark my pictures are. This is WITH the flash on. Also, people had no regard for others and I can't tell you how many times someone knocked my arm or pushed me from behind. I had to delete so many shots that didn't come out because either someone pushed me or walked in front of my camera.
They sang four songs: "We Go Together", "Sandy", "Hopelessly Devoted", and "You're the One That I Want." Everyone sounded great and after they were done a cake was brought out for Max and the crowd sang "Happy Birthday".
Like I said before I had to run back upstairs to buy a CD in order to get into the autograph line. I was the second to last person in line and I finally got up to the table. I wanted the inside of the cd signed (under where the CD goes) because the plastic would protect it better. But, as anyone who has the CD knows, this part is black and red. I knew the cast would have black or blue sharpies so I went to AC Moore and bought a silver paint pen. Ryan was first and explained to him quickly that he'd have to use my pen. He thought my idea of signing the inside was great and that the silver pen looked great. Then he handed it off to Robyn who also "oohed and ahhed" over my idea. My plan was to have Max and Laura sign the front and the rest of the cast sign the inside. But Max wanted to sign the inside which made me laugh. I said "Max, you're such a diva." Laura's eyebrows shot up and she started laughing. Since Max had already signed the inside there was no use in asking Laura to sign the over so I just handed her the inside as well. Then she passed it to Matt who thought the idea of signing the inside was amazing. As did Jose and Lindsay. Who knew that this would get such a reaction from the cast? I guess no one else has asked them to do that before. To me it's just a no-brainer because the autographs are better protected this way. Not all CDs easily come a part though so you have to be careful and not crack the cover.
After I was done with the line I hung around a bit longer and took some more pictures because I knew there were so many people who wanted them. I also wanted to simply wave goodbye to Max and Laura before I left. So I'm standing there out of the way not bothering anyone when a guard came up behind me and said "You have to leave now." So not only did I have to shell out money for a third CD (I already had one at home) but now I was being told to leave.
I have never experienced anything like this before. As I've said in other posts I'm used to how Major League Baseball handles things. They work so much smoother than this and treat the fans so much better. Compared to them Virgin Records was a Mickey Mouse operation.
Yeah, the Virgin Records signings are very chaotic and disorganized.
Generally, for the two or three signings I've been to, it's walk, walk, give your booklet, pass it down the line, pick it up, leave, with no words to the people signing.
It was only at a Brian Stokes Mitchell album signing that I've seen the signer talk to people.
Try being there when there's a real celebrity. It's murder.

Thanks. I just wish I could be there to hear the "SQUEEEE!" when she opens her package!

I was at the signing tonight also... Eris, your pictures are great! I went into the city last week when I found out you needed those stupid wristbands (even though I already had a copy at home), so I was on the line when they were performing... I was all the way on the other side of where Eris was, so none of my pictures came out of when they were coming down the escalator. I tried taking pictures of the stage beforehand, but I was towards the end of the line in the back and I'm short, plus as Eris said the pictures didn't come out too well.
BUT, I did get most of the performances on video on my camera. They also sang Happy Birthday to Max and I got most of that on video as well Like I said, though, I was in the back so the visual of the cast on stage isn't too great (I tried) but you can put Eris's pictures together with my video and imagine if you want lol. It was the best I could do...
The guy that was cutting off the wristbands when you got to the front of the line was really nice and he asked if we wanted him to cut our wristbands in a way that wouldn't ruin them, so we could keep them.... which is what I was going to ask him to do anyway... haha.
So we got up to the front and Ryan said hello to us and signed the cover. Robyn also said hi to us and smiled. Basically everyone else just focused on signing the myriad of booklets coming at them lol. I bought Max a birthday gift and I was too shy to give it to him, so my friend gave it to him for me... Max seemed really surprised and genuinely appreciative. Laura was also shocked and said that it was nice. He didn't open it there, though, so I'm not sure if he liked it or not... I hope he did.
Well, yeah. We hung around until the end, just to see if anything else interesting happened... the cast signed the rest of the cds, took a few press photos together and left. Nate was there, as well as a few people Max knew. He left the table to go say hello to them at one point. They went up to the second level and took a picture next to the Grease poster advertising the signing, and then they went upstairs to leave.
So, that's it... I'm going to try and get the videos up tomorrow. If not, they'll definitely be up by Wednesday (I have classes tomorrow, so I'm sorry you guys will probably have to wait a little bit...)
Aww, sounds like it was fun...I've been out of commission for a month on account of my crazy work schedule (72-96 hours a week, blech). I practically missed the arrival of fall what with being in the hospital all day and night. I was thrilled to see the sun today...PoetryInMotion, have you had a chance to upload those videos? Would love to see them - I'm sure the cast and audience all had a good time.
