BROADWAY'S LEGALLY BLONDE TO BE BROADCAST ON MTV
THIS SATURDAY OCTOBER 13th!

blonde.jpg
Traditional Broadway philosophy has been not to allow a film or television adaptation of a Broadway show to come to life until after a show has completed its run on the Great White Way. When the film version of Chicago hit it big, however, Broadway pundits watched as the ticket sales for the live show on Broadway and around the U.S. soared. Are new audiences even more likely to flock to a live production after getting a taste of the excitement on the big or small screen? The producers of the smash hit sensation, Legally Blonde, are taking that gamble. They recently allowed MTV Music Television access to record the musical, which is based on the MGM film comedy phenomenon of the same name. The resulting TV special will be aired this Saturday, October 13th at 10:00 AM Pacific Time.

The MTV program will feature the broadcast of the entire musical as well as a behind-the scenes look at the show, which currently plays Broadway's Palace Theatre. The television special will subsequently air several times on the cable network. The musical was filmed a total of three times once in its entirety, another without an audience, and a Sept. 18 filming with an audience of theatregoers ages 15-25. That performance took on a more interactive feel with the entire orchestra section full of pink-clad fans. All of the footage will be combined for the MTV broadcast. The MTV broadcast will feature a Pink Carpet extravaganza filmed at the Palace Theatre; the aforementioned backstage feature will air prior to the telecast of the musical.

Here's a possibility, though unlikely...........

After nearly 5 years on Broadway, the final performance of "Smokey Joe's Cafe" was filmed and released on VHS/DVD in 2001 and is still available.

A year or so ago, HBO had it in their regular rotation of movies. It's a revue of Lieber & Stoller rock'n'roll songs of the '50s and '60s, and is one of my favorite shows of all time.

kari.......I'm not sure what you're referring to.
"Smokey Joe's Cafe" is not listed on any channel, HBO or otherwise, at 7:00 EDT Sunday or any other time. I have it on DVD.
"Grease" will be on ABC Family at 5:00 EDT Sunday. That's always fun.

I highly recommend viewing Smoky Joe's Cafe. You may very well find it at your library or a video tape store. It can also be purchased on line for a reasonable price.

It is pure Talent with a capital "T" and the music and choreography are excellent.

The tape is a filiming of the closing performance of the show.

I had the pleasure of seeing Smokey Joes on Broadway and on tv.

The video is great, but nothing beats thrill of a live performance!

I didn't see Smokey on Broadway, so the video seemed like the ultimate thrill to me. I just looked it up at Blockbuster.com, and posted a rave review....I'm a happy subscriber.

I loved the new Grease and was genuinely thrilled by the finale... I think that's where it comes very close to the impact that Smokey delivers. But for me, no singular moment could ever compare with Victor Trent Cook's galvanic rendition of "I Who Have Nothing".
