Broadway Grosses - Week Ending 9/7/2008

I tried to cut and paste the information and it was a mess. Here is a link

This is all quite normal for this time of year. Kids go back to school. No one is traveling! Not surprised at all by this. Same thing happened last year.

Actually Grease was at 89.2% last year the week of labor day.

Grease was down 11.7% for that week last year. For a new show, that was quite high!

Really, Grease is hardly a "new" show. It's a revival and it's been revived before. It was doing better last year, but overall most shows have taken a hit and this isn't the most down of any show. Every show took a hit last year at this time too.

This is a bad time of year. Hopefully, Grease will improve in the weeks to come, but like the winter doldrums, this is a quieter time of year for Broadway.

Remember, it still sells well on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Tuesday nights the theater can be somewhat less full.

Yes, you're right. I just meant that the revival was "new" last summer. It is a slow time of year for all of Broadway.

Ummmmm........who cares how full the seats were, what was the Gross. The money is where its at. You can fill the seats all you want, but if you had to do it with discounts and comps, then the show will close.

What would you rather have????? 100% capacity at $90/seat or 60% capacity at $180/sear.

If the gross minus expenses equals less-than the "break-even" point, the show will close.

I doubt that the show is in any danger of closing.

Hi Kristen! Ill be more than happy to explain my comment! When Greases numbers were posted on this thread Shady Lady said that it was to be expected and that the same thing happened last year-which of course wasnt true. I provided the statistics from last year-and wow what a contrast. Last year over the week of Labor Day Grease had 89.2% capacity down from 100% the week before. This year the percentage was at 55.5% from 92% the week before-hardly the same is it? Shady Lady said that an 11% decrease for a new show was really bad-which most people would find to be a ridiculous statement especially when you factor in that the show was at 100% the week before and it was still at 89%...oh and guess what this really bad week in Shady Ladys assessment was only three points lower than Greases capacity last week! It must be really difficult for SOME Ashley fans when a show hits a bad week when they think she is the only person responsible for the shows success. I said what ever she needs to believe in order to sleep at night because the numbers dont lie-but Shady Lady tried to Shade the truth. Lol

Wow, lucky you! You should go into politics! It's a real gift, and a curse, to be able to see things the way you want them to be, attempt to convince others of your way of thinking and then be able to ignore all evidence to the contrary.....and then be able to sleep at night! I'm impressed, your mother must be so proud.

Hey Grease got bad reviews for more than one reason long before Ashley and Derek got there. Besides, they have never advertised Ashley and Derek, only Taylor Hicks and now Ace Young.

Sorry for the confusion. My statement wasn't in the content that the show would be closing. I was merely stating that the number of seats filled doesn't matter. Its how much the show makes.

However, if you would like to talk about the show, if the GROSS continues (which I'm sure it won't) to be at $372,000............Closing will be the only option. I don't believe there is any need to hit a panic button yet. Its only one week and Ace is about to begin. Hopefully, that will carry them into the holidays in which the Gross will surely go up.

IMO I think they should market the leads to the fullest extent. Pictures, billboards, and merchandise of Ashley and Derek would sell and bring more people in to see Grease as well as have current audience members buy more items.

While swag is a money maker, it isn't the way shows really make a profit. Merchandise sales are a very small portion of the weekly "nut," which I have no clue as to the amount. Ticket sales are the be all to that end. Hopefully, ticket sales will pick up.

Anyone can get that sometimes shows have bad weeks, especially with other expenses so high right now.  Of course, I would rather see "Grease" than put gas in my car and luckily, I am fortunate enough to do both.  But I understand that some people can't.  As for Ashley, of course we believe that she contributes to the successfulness of the show!  Why else would they have hired her?!  The powers that be at the show want the best for the show, and they are doing all that they can do make it do as well as it possibly can.  Hiring Ashley was one of the steps that they took to do that.  They could have picked anyone, and they picked Ashley. That says a lot right there, as well as the fact that they are pleased with how she is doing in the role.  smile  Of course "we Ashley fans" know that it takes many people to make the show the best it can be.  But Ashley definitely plays a key role in making the show a success!

Just a note, swag, posters and t shirts and such are not included in the weekly grosses for a show. Just ticket sales.

Doubt that the show grosses more than a few thousand in a good week on swag.

Why is it that people here seem to be anxious for Grease to close? I don't get it. Why would someone who is supposed to be a "Grease" fan go on and on about Grease closing?

Does anyone here know who the producers are? Well, among them is Nederlander Presentations Inc. who also happens to OWN the Brooks Atkinson, David Ian, Terry Allen Kramer and Paul Nicholas. David Ian is also producing Gypsy and I am sure more.

Who said anything about wanting Grease to close? Quite the opposite, but naturally,  you do worry when the numbers go down so significantly.

Just to clarify (and thanks for the understanding D & B). I again will apologize for the confusion. I will admit that when I was reading the content of this thread, I was under the impression that thats what we were talking about. The show closing I mean. I realize that I was the first to say such a thing, but it was only in the context that filling seats doesn't mean a thing.

JustDandy, just to keep the record straight, I would love nothing but this production to last 10 more years. And yes, I am a big Max and Laura fan. But I will never wish any bad on anybody. If that is what you were trying to say, then you don't know me at all and I would wish that you wouldn't construde my opinions.

For the personal attacks that some members have made on this board, its no wonder why some valuable-veteran members have decided to share their wisdom somewhere else.

I don't disagree with you-the show will have good weeks and bad weeks. This past week was an all time low for Grease and I wouldn't be surprised if were never repeated again. I just like it when people are as accurate as possible when they post. Obviously when someone says the exact same thing happened last year and there was actually more than 50% more people watching the show last year than this year, someone, this time me, will feel the need to point out the truth. I would also like to point out that my original post regarding this topic was posting all the grosses for the preceeding week so as to point out that Grease was not alone in it's decline.
