Well, the Tony nominations are due to be announced May 13, so I'll guess we'll see what's up. I didn't know that the anyone did any performances in front of a nominating committee. I just thought they saw the shows and made their nominations from there. The statement from Max does peak my curiosity though...

Just saw this bit on Broadway.com, so this might be what Max is referencing:

"In other Tony news, there will be a preview concert, hosted by A Chorus Line's Mario Lopez, which will feature performances by all 12 Tony eligible musicals. The event will be taped in a special broadcast from Jazz at Lincoln Center on May 11 and air on WCBS-TV (Channel 2) in New York on June 7, and across the country on affiliate stations between May 26 and June 7."

The rumor this year is that all of the musicals that opened on Broadway this year will be performing on the Tony telecast.

All?
Hard to imagine that many shows, unless it is just the ones that opened this year.

The producers want decent ratings, and they don't have much to work with. There's not much of a star gazing factor, as the nominees are mostly unknown outside of NY.

For me, the musical numbers never translated effectively to the screen. The only ones I remember are recent...the one with Hyde White and Monk, which I didn't like at all, and the one from "Spring Awakening", which also seemed weird. Some of the spoken scenes have worked much better and made me want to see the play. My reasoning for this is that spoken scenes are on tv day and night, whereas sung scenes almost never. It follows that if a show has a song that stands alone, it would attract the American Idol oriented public to watch. I'm available for hire as an Assistant Producer.

The article on Broadway.com stated there will be 12 eligible musicals this year. So the "all" would mean those 12, I suppose.

What Max is refering to is that the company will perform as a company at the Tony Awards. Thos who watch the Tonys should know that the nominated musicals showcase a number during the telecast.

Well, duh.

But who said GREASE would even be nominated? They only have to nominate 75% of the revivals.
