Grease - My First Broadway Play/Musical
Permalink Closed

August can't come fast enough.  There will be 25 of us attending and it is all because of Taylor Hicks.  I am so excited!

I watched the reality show "You're The One That I Want" because I love the movie "Grease".

I've always wanted to see a Broadway play and tour New York City and when I heard about Taylor in the roll of Teen Angel......that was the defining moment to take this trip all the way from NC.

Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this forum to learn about the other cast members.

Any tips on places to eat and things to see while I'm in NY.  There are so many places and this trip is a chance of a lifetime for me.

Grease is the word....

Becco's - a delightful Italian restaurant (reserve in advance) opened by Lydia Bastianich(who has one of the PBS cooking shows) and her son. They have a pre/post theater price-fixed dinner of all you can eat of their 3 pasta dishes of the day. Comes with a caesar salad. $22 or so, per person. Located on 46th Street between 8th and 9th ave.

Kodama Sushi - great sushi, if that's your thing. Located on 8th Ave, between 45th and 46th.

I went to Beccos years ago when my daughter was a struggling actress and was working as a hostess there. The food is the best I've eaten in NYC and the pasta was sensational . I'll be going to New York for the 4th so I will certainly go back there.

Hope she found work as an actress! Every actor needs a day job.

I'm coming to NYC next month and I can eat a lot of carbs (medical reasons) so does Becco's have other dishes? If not can you recommend another restaurant. BTW Taylor says he loves Italian food - maybe you'll see him there!

BBS, I'm fairly sure the pasta choices are different on different days. Like "daily specials".

And Niram, they have an extensive menu. Chicken dishes, seafood dishes, etc. I'm sure you'll find something you can eat!

There are also hundreds of other restaurants to choose from.  At Menu pages you can search by location and by cuisine.  There are online reviews and menus so you can get an idea of what they have at what price.

Thanks!  Stockard Channing was my favorite Rizzo ever.  I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion with the die hard Broadway Greasers, but I can't help it.  Her version of "There are Worse Things I Could Do" was my favorite part of the movie.

Stockard Channing was amazing, but so is Jenny Powers. If you see her, you would appreciate her talent.

Oh I'm sure she is! I would love to see her in the role. I haven't seen the current cast - I saw the show years ago with Jasmine Guy as Rizzo. It was weird because I couldn't stop thinking of her as Whitley on Different World.

Stockard Channing played the part so well that to this day when I see her I see Rizzo ! The last time I saw the play, which had to be at least five years ago I think Tracey Nelson played Rizzo.!

Yes, she did play Rizzo at one point. As did Rosie O'Donnel, Brooke Sheilds, Jasmine Guy, Linda Blair..........

It is definitely the best female role in the show. IMO

And Adrienne Barbeau, who was nominated for a Tony

Yes, Adrienne was the original Rizzo, along with Barry Bostwick as Danny and Carole Demas as Sandy. I just can't picture Barry Bostwick as Danny though.....LOL

Unfortunately, the clip of Bostwick, Demas, and backup cast, doing "Summer Nights" at a concert 10 years after they did the show, has been removed from youtube. She is charming and her singing is gorgeous. His characterization of Danny is for the ages....boyish, hormonal, inventive, hilarious, and his singing is spectacular.

My guess as to why he didn't get the movie, although infinitely superior to Travolta, is that he isn't the moviestar type, and JT is, or was. It's a terrible loss that BB did not become the star that his immense talent deserves.

Jenny Powers' understudy was there the day I saw Grease. Jenny seems to be really talented on the short videos I have watched. I'm sorry I didn't get to see her talent in the whole play.

Thanks for the link, that's a fun site and it's organized very well.  I've bookmarked it for future use.
