TWO shows that shouldn't be making it - but are - must be given their due today.
First, "Grease" - which vaulted right over the critics to box office glory. It's playing to sold-out houses and is grossing nearly $800,000 a week.
It got a little lift from the Tonys, but its real draw this summer is "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks, who's playing Teen Angel.
An insider says Hicks is worth at least $150,000 in extra ticket sales a week.
(Make a note of that, Mr. Agent.)
Whenever Hicks whips out his harmonica, the audience goes nuts.
They're having such a blast that the "Grease" megamix at the end of the show - this is where the critics ran screaming from the theater - now runs 10 minutes, with Hicks singing the title song and then playing it on his harmonica.
Meanwhile, the producers of the show are no longer flinching from the critical blows but are starting to have fun with them.
Charles Isherwood recently wrote: "Are the Tonys going to open up the lines so viewers at home can phone in their votes for their favorites? In which case perhaps 'Grease' would have been the year's big winner."
Look for a newspaper ad that will say:
"If the audience had voted, Grease would have been the year's big winner!" - Charles Isherwood, The New York Times.
Thanks MrE, this is great news. I knew the audience went crazy when Taylor did the harmonica thing, but wasn't aware he was doing that great. He's s great addition. I know I'm happy.
And might I add that this is long overdue, well-deserved praise for a young man who has had a bullseye on his back for the past 2.5 years. I am so happy for him.
Thanks for the heads up, Mr. E.

Well, Allelulia and Amen! This made me tear up! Good for Taylor and good for GREASE! Let's see this little piece of "news" running all over the media - the way all the negative snark and innuendo are seen constantly! If a troll or chroll, or any other miserable creature crawls out of the woodwork to try to turn this into a negative, I won't be turning the other cheek this time! (Can you tell how infrequently we read positive remarks? I'm almost euphoric!) Thanks for indulging me just this once!
I will not post to be negative, but reality has to set in sometime.
Don't believe everything you read. I am actually quite surprised that MrE didn't offer his "GURU" opinion. As I do believe that TH is helping ticket sales, its a far stretch of the imagination to think that its pushing the gross to $800,000 per week and that he is responsible for $150,000 of that.

Believe what you want, but I'll go with the NY Post's opinion! Great news for Taylor, Grease and his fans. We all knew he would do it!
The curtain call medley now runs 10 minutes? They must have expanded it....the more Taylor the better, as far as I'm concerned, and the audience too, apparently. In order for the $800,000 figure to be accurate, it has to be based on future sales...nothing like that has shown up so far.
M&L are leaving, A&D don't exactly have the same allure of M&L, so the producers brought in someone who would sell tickets. Whether you like him or not, whether you think he's talented or not, whether he's good in the show or not, he's got an incredibly large fanbase that will keep the show afloat until he leaves.

You're more than likely correct, when you talk about future sales. Very few Soul Patrollers have already been to see the show. It looks like those that have are the ones who live in the NY/NJ area, and who plan on seeing it a few times. The list we have at the Boogie Board of members (just from the Boogie) who have ordered tickets for the rest of the summer, is pretty impressive. Many, many tickets have been bought for the coming weeks. (I have four myself for the last weekend in July. I was there to see Jersey Boys last October and it was wonderful!)
This weekend, there's quite a group going - it includes one of Taylor's most talented and supportive fans, who is coming from Finland to see Taylor on Broadway and to reunite with other Taylor fans and friends. (She's also going to be in Washington to enjoy TH performing at the Capitol Fourth, and that's very special for her.) I don't know if you've seen one of the pictures of the caricature of TH on Broadway that Katja drew and which was presented to Taylor on Opening Night by another fan - but it's wonderful. She's drawn a number of caricatures since becoming a fan of Taylor's - some of which have been signed by Taylor and his band and auctioned off for charity. She's also produced a series of "Purple Bus" videos - happy little movies of the Soul Patrol following Taylor and the band as they toured the country, and other special memories for his fans. (The over 20 episodes are on YouTube.) The fans attending this weekend are a fun, passionate bunch and they'll no doubt be touting Grease all over NY. I'd expect them to just attract people they talk to on the street and entice them to see the show (that's how friendly they are!) but I heard Saturday's show is sold out!
I think everyone agrees that whomever or whatever, attracts attention, getting people into the theater is good for the production and for the entire cast. Ticket sales should increase because of Taylor's appearance and exposure on the Capitol Fourth program. Millions of people who voted for him haven't heard too much about him since he won Idol (due to lack of radio play and promotion, etc.) There's a whole segment of the American public who will become reacquainted and enamored of Taylor on the 4th of July. That will mean only good things for Grease.
This post is far too long, I know. Forgive me for the excess verbiage. LOL! I'm just so thrilled with the positive press, that I don't care if their exact facts and statistics aren't 100% correct. I'll take the great comments - even if they're not completely accurate. After all, we have to put up with the negative press all the time - and it's always replete with total inaccuracies!
Anyway, my point is that the Soul Patrol "invasion" of Broadway is just beginning. That influx, along with the number of tourists who are "just normal fans" (LOL) of Taylor, and regular theater patrons who are interested because of the new positive buzz, should keep the seats filled throughout the summer.
I will not post to be negative, but reality has to set in sometime.

May I ask why you think that?
Grease has not grossed $800k per week all year, and its the end of June. The last time it grossed over $800k was the last week of 2007. For the year 2008, it has only broke the $700K mark only 3 times in which the last time was late March. Thats over 3 months ago. The article doesn't say predictions. It states that thats what this show is doing. And its not. As I said, TH is a great addition to the show, and I think he is selling tickets. But there is no need to over-inflate the situation.

You make a good point here, azure. We have certainly had to deal with way more than our share of negative "misinformation."

I can understand your frustration if the numbers are inaccurate or over-inflated. We deal with that crap all the time regarding Taylor's cd sales numbers. The figures have never changed since the first number was reported months ago, even though the album has consistently sold hundreds per week, since that first report.
The media is either too lazy or just doesn't care enough to update and check out the facts before they write an article or open their mouths. The only sales figure that is ever even close to being accurate is the one for world-wide sales. It is quite maddening to have the number 700,000 repeated ad infinitum on every piece written or shown about Taylor.
So, I can appreciate your concern regarding incorrect numbers, but just know that the problem is not unique to Broadway ticket sales. The Soul Patrol has had to learn to live with inaccurate reporting. We probably could share tons of coping mechanisms for dealing with frustration! LOL!

This made me laugh, and I needed a good laugh today. (((SOUL PATROL, BABY!!)))
Thanks for posting that article. I love the part about the audience going nuts when he pulls out his harmonica. I've seen Taylor in concert several times and I can relate to how they feel, it's my favorite part too.

25 members of his fanbase who post together at a private board are travelling in august to see him. Taylor's fans will definately show up, and we will help push ticket sales up..

Huh? Did I make a post in my sleep?
Since you seem to want my opinion... I think Taylor has found his destiny, and I hope they extend his stay in Grease for as long as it sells tickets, and I hope that he then finds another similar role on Broadway, and another, ad infinitum. I'm sure there is a Tony with his name on it, waiting in the wings.

I've actually heard about many people who are planning to come and see the show so that they can see Ashley and Derek. I think that they are going to bring many new people to the show. I think that there are also a lot of fans of Max and Laura who liked Ashley and Derek too and will go and see the show again.
Sounds like this is the best possible outcome for all involved in the production of Grease...I'm thrilled for everyone, what a pleasure it must be to go out there every night and know that because of you someone left their problems behind for a few hours ! The positive press for Taylor has been a long time coming, it's well deserved This article was awesome !
I'm sorry! Did I mistakenly quote you? I'm not surprised actually. I admit I get confused reading the posts here. I think sometimes I put myself on automatic pilot when I'm looking for the bottom line! I must have quoted one of the other "H" names, but please don't make me go through this whole thread to find the right one. LOL! (We have quite a few names on the Boogie that begin with "J" - I was trying to get a point across the other day to a new poster, and I wanted to refer to an old post. I couldn't for the life of me remember who the poster was - but at least I knew it was one of who I call the "J" Girls! All 6 of them!)
I think we're all on the same page here. We all want the entire cast and everyone connected to the production to be successful, and to be recognized for their hard work. And beyond that, we want to enjoy the hell out of the show when we're sitting in those seats!
When I saw the video of the hand-print celebration at Planet Hollywood (when Max and Laura were standing with TH for pics, and Max made rabbit ears on top of Taylor's head) I just knew that this was a good "fit" for him, and that his presence was going to bring out the best in these kids, and they in him. A shot of Max just standing off to TH's side, watching him do the hand print, showed in his smile how much he was enjoying the guy. That was the night I ordered my tickets. I knew he was in a good place, with good people, and that he'd come through for them. The following week in the radio interview, he referred to the cast as his family and likened them to the members of his band. Taylor has always said that he makes sure to have friends and family around him because they keep him grounded. It works. Honestly, you couldn't find a more decent guy than Taylor, and that's the reason all of his fans (the ten of us) are giddy with excitement at the positive media.

Funny, when the press were insulting Taylor they were oh so correct, but when when there's proof of Taylor's drawing power on Broadway, somehow the respected theater critic in the NY Post is 'inflating numbers". LOL.... it's laughable. Some people just can't stand good news regarding Mr. Hicks.
I say HIGH FIVE for the the realization of his talent!!

We have all known for awhile now that TH has talent. I would be "jumping for joy" if this article was the truth. Unfortunately, its just a bunch of lies. I think that TH and Grease and all of the fans deserve better than this. I am absolutely offended that LIES like this could be printed. I realize that it could be interpreted as one mans opinion. But no matter how you spin it, the entire article is all lies. I will not be "happy" or give praise to anyone about an article that spreads lies. Just my .02 cents........

Not trying to argue, just an honest question....Why are you so sure its all lies? The info supposedly comes from an "insider", isn't it possible that this person has access to information that we are not aware of, such as advance ticket sales? What reason would the NY Post (never Taylor fans in the past) have to lie in order to promote either TH or Grease?

Hello,
I really don't think anyone here is in favor of out and out lies in articles about Taylor. It's never stopped the bashers. Even Clive Davis stood before the press and lied about him, saying that Chris Daughtry was the only contestant who wrote his own music when Taylor had already released 2 albums of mainly his own songs. So forgive us if we don't get too upset this time when the article is positive. I know nothing about sales figures, and I'm sure you are very well versed on that sort of thing. I can understand how you'd be upset. But after 2.5 years of lies, bashing and humiliation, led by the very people who brought Taylor to the public eye, forgive us if we bask in the glow of not so accurate good news....if only for a little while.

Advance tickets sales are credited towards the weeks that they are purchased. I.E.--If you bought a ticket for July 20, the ticket sale would go towards the week ending July 20, not this week. If you go to broadwayworld.com/grosses you will find gross sales for each week starting from when Grease was in preview in July of 2007. You will see that so far for the first 25 weeks of 2008, Grease has not once reached the $800k mark, and has only hit the $700k mark 3 times. As I said before, if it was the truth, I would suggest keeping Mr. Hicks for longer than 3 months.................And who knows, those figures may come true and they can write another article and then we can have a party. But for now, I will simply reserve my opinion to myself and never believe anything from that writer or that paper. Simple

I guess I can understand as well on why everyone would want to toot the horns. I just took it as it being no different than if they had wrote that Grease is now only doing $400k and that the suddent drop was due because of TH. Nobody would like that. Especially when its a compete lie. Nevertheless, toot away, I will no longer stop you. And by the way, "looking forward to seeing you at the party". Which party is this?????

I'm not that concerned about whether the sales numbers are correct or not. This is what really stands out to me:
"Whenever Hicks whips out his harmonica, the audience goes nuts.
They're having such a blast that the "Grease" megamix at the end of the show - this is where the critics ran screaming from the theater - now runs 10 minutes, with Hicks singing the title song and then playing it on his harmonica."

They're having such a blast that the "Grease" megamix at the end of the show - this is where the critics ran screaming from the theater - now runs 10 minutes, with Hicks singing the title song and then playing it on his harmonica."
You know, you're right. We got in such an uproar about right or wrong numbers, that we looked right past the high praise. And somehow, even though I haven't seen the show, I have no doubt that this part is very true. I have, afterall, experienced the Wooooooooo!

Good Morning TH fans! I wasn't sure where to put this because I wanted a couple of the posters who probably won't come to Taylor's forum to read it - but I decided to put it here anyway. Most of the threads in the Rydell High Forum have to do with individual cast members and I didn't see an appropriate thread there either. Anyway, maybe they'll check here.
This is from MK at the Boogie who was interested in Michael Riedel (the critic from the positive piece yesterday.)
"I was reading some profiles of MIchael Riedel, and he admits that he loves to churn out months of columns of the slow-motion crash of a Broadway disappointment. Sounds like the first person who would have hopped on the "TH is a reality show has-been trying to stretch out his 15 minutes of fame band wagon." Anyhoo ... he explains his news gathering process for the column ..."
Is everyone else aware that the Riedel article actually appeared in the NYPost (not just online?) It has a picture and everything! Unbelievable publicity. Anyway, someone on the Boogie took a pic of the article from the Post and it's up at the Boogie - but I couldn't bring it over here. If you want to check it out, it's in the Grease section and the thread is Hicks Ignites.
