Hi all......Eris, or Mr. E (someone knowlegeable like that) do you know the reason why Max and Laura are not continuing in the show? I just listened to Derek's interview and got kind of upset at the news that "they didn't quite work out".....ok, whatever! I know the show is still packing in the people, it's still very popular and has been since it opened. So I'm just wondering what the official reason is; I've heard alot of rumors out there. I'm just grateful to get a chance to see them one more time before they are done!!!!!!!! Many thanks to all!
You'll never hear the "official" reason. Even the words that come out of actors' mouths aren't necessarily the "real" reason. In the theater, when you hear an actor leaves a production for "family reasons" or "creative differences" or "prior commitments" it usually means they were fired because they didn't work out in the part. (That doesn't apply to GREASE, I'm just using it as an example).
From what I understood - and this is purely through the grapevine - Max and Laura were both offered the tour and turned it down. Max didn't want to renew his Broadway contract. I assume Laura may have, but chose not to. I don't think there's a big story to it. They had a year contract to begin with and now it's over.
Mr. E. is right in that Max and Laura had year contracts that are now over. They were both offered touring roles, and both turned it down perhaps for different reasons. They were not offered an extended Broadway contract but they had a spectacular year, tickets sales were great and I am certain everyone is and was happy. It is time for change. Change brings an opportunity for new people in the roles which brings new fans, which keeps interest up and keeps ticket sales going longer. Change also is good for Max and Laura--a chance to move on to something else also. I can only speak for Laura but she has not as of yet made a commitment to what will be next for her. She has turned a couple things down while continuing to audition for all kinds of things. I'm hoping she might come home and see her Mom for week or two! Ha!
I am not knowledgeable in the theater world, but maybe the TV exposure and the Broadway show were enough for Max and Laura to allow them to be where they want to be. Because of TV, their names are well known, even to those who do not stay in touch with Broadway happenings. I wish they would've stayed another few years, but I expect great things for the both of them. Do other Broadway actors have to work a little harder to get their names "out there"?
I personally think Laura is really destined for greatness and the one we will be seeing a lot of over the years. Just watch her knock ALW's socks off singing Jesus Christ Superstar (search Youtube or see it posted by me on another thread)--I got goosebumps watching it again.
Keep in mind that was BEFORE she had a year of Broadway experience. This was a wonderful jumping off point, but the Sandy role in this show was not the best showcase for Laura's talents. She is correct to move on. I think she looks like Julie Andrews which can only be a plus along with all her other talents. Best of luck to her. I know she is going places.
P.S. I hope she can put on a little weight when this run is done. When I saw the show she looked distractingly frail (I saw the show during the very stressful first days of the previews--so that may have been temporary). I had seen the taping of the show live and didn't notice it then so I was actually shocked.
Every person you see in a bit part on any of the "Law and Order" shows is someone from the stage. Since L&O shoots in NYC, it's the easiest show to get on. When Kelly Ripa and Whoopi Goldberg did their sitcoms a few years ago - also shot in NYC - you would also see a mostly "theater" face ensemble.
Many theater actors do commercials - there's a REACH toothpaste add now that features someone who's been in Avenue Q and Spelling Bee. One of the former Elphaba's in WICKED does (or has previously done) voice overs for the pay-per-view porn channels. Anything for $$ - it's not a steady gig.
Many actors/writers/directors also teach to earn money when they're not working.
And Off-Broadway, Off-Off Broadway isn't an embarrassment, either.
Parts on Law and Order are pretty easy to get. My younger brother's former roommate was an actress and she helped him get a few jobs as an extra on the show. He's not trying to break into acting but the extra money was helpful for a guy on his own for the first time. In fact, I just saw one of his episodes the other day on cable.

Thanks for the update Jane. I know how you must miss her. And I'm sure come July 21, she will be ready for a little R and R. And hopefully that will be in MN.
As for the future. If I had a wish, I would wish that Laura and Nate were on Broadway in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" together. Now that would be AWESOME!!!!!! I would probably have to move. And just because that is just a dream, my other wish would be for her success and happiness in whatever she chooses to do!!
hey all. i work for the show and all i know about the contracts is that Ashley Marie Spencer is taking over Sandy and Derek whoever is the new danny. if anyone cares or didnt know.
That's great that you work for the show! There are many fans of Ashley and Derek on the board, and we are looking forward to seeing them in the roles! :)
I hope I'm not too late to see Laura and Max. I thought I read somewhere that they would be performing through July 20th. I'll be attending July 19th. Am I right? I voted for both of them and so wanted to see them too.

Do you know how long their contract is? I'm wondering if they Austin and Alley will get their chance.

Well Allie is in the ensemble right now. Whether she'll get bumped up eventually I have no idea. Austin was in a show that may or may not open on Broadway at some point.

I'm still reading through threads so I don't know if this has been discussed much, but is there going to be a touring production of Grease? And if so, when does this begin? Is there a schedule? I live in Northeast Ohio and would love to see it. I can't aford a trip to NY.
MrE....did you see "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" when Donny Osmond played Joseph? He did it for 6 years in a touring production. He was wonderful in it!
Oh, so the tour would be a whole new cast? Well, even still....I've never gotten to see the stage production of Grease. I am a huge fan of the movie since it came out in 1978 and would love to see the differance.

You work for what show? Grease? In what capacity? Odd that you have never posted before. Even odder that you don't know to capitalize the pronoun "I" and don't know Derek's last name. Wonder where your sign on name came from, hatingta?
DogsandBirds, perhaps you know who takes care of merchandise at the theater. Probabbly wouldn't be too hard to find out. Sounds like that is what this person's job might be.
You know what musical I'd love to have on DVD and have no idea if it's even available? The "Cinderella" with Stuart Damon and .....shoot, I can't remember the actresses name now. I know it but my memory fails me at the moment. Leslie Ann Down?

LOL, Pinkfan, I hope that's not Hatingta's job. If it is, I think some marketing skills might be in order. Sales might increase if the customers were not called crazy for buying their merchandise.
I'd heard something about some regional theatres already having dates booked for the tour. But I'm not sure when it's supposed to launch.
I'm near Baltimore, and Grease is scheduled to come to the Hippodrome Feb 2009. I think I will be going on Valentine's Day!?!? That would be a wonderful gift from hubby!
I'm really hoping Grease will come back to CT.also. If anyone hears anything please post it.I'll be checking the theaters in the area.Speaking of musicals on DVD, I absolutely adore Phantom. The music and lyrics are simply stunning.
as far as i know. austin either wasnt interested or didnt get offered. but if you are talking about Allie Schulz... she is a swing for the show now and about last week ish she was on for Sandy. But I have no news on Austin... But SUPER excited for Spence to make her Sandy debut.... shes amazing as Amber so I cannot wait to see her as Sandy! and I know she is SOOOO excited!! Hope this helps!

Do you know how long Ashely contract is?
Hi That Girl! I am not positively sure, but I think I read on one of the newspaper articles that Ashley's contract was for six months. Not sure though.

All of the articles that have announced that Derek and Ashley will be the new Danny and Sandy are all gone. Either edited or deleted. Just gone. Even the blog on Maxs' site is gone along with the announcement on Dereks' website. All gone. I realize that it not official. But you would think that if its true, that you would just make the announcement instead of making everyone else delete the news.
Does anyone know for sure that they will be the new Danny and Sandy??????
