There are too many artists discovered because of Taylor to mention! I've also noticed, that even if I'd been somewhat familiar with an artist, and maybe a song or two of theirs, Taylor has made me aware of many more songs, and sometimes entire bodies of work from certain artists. (His tags alone have introduced many artists to his fans.)
The other fascinating thing to me, regarding new artists and their music, is the unbelievable knowledge of music and music history, that so many Soul Patrollers have. I realize that some of them are musicians themselves, and I'd sort of expect them to be veritable fonts of information! LOL. But some of the "regular" posters have such an amazing in-depth knowledge of artists and their music, that it's mind-boggling.
But, whether it's from other fans, or his tagging, or comments he's made in interviews, or articles I've read because he's mentioned them, my knowledge and appreciation of music in general, and some particular artists has grown considerably through Taylor. I think the first time I realized the extent of general musical knowledge and trivia (that I'd managed to pick up from GC's and the BB alone,) was on a drive to Foxwoods (Hi Judy!) one afternoon. I not only managed to hold my own in a conversation about a band my husband had happened to find, but I was much more knowledgeable about the leader of that band, than he was. (I was so-o proud of myself, and the ride sure went by more quickly.)
Oh, BTW, that band is the Mavericks and the lead singer is Raul Malo. If you get the chance, listen to him on you tube. He's done a few solo albums and was a guest last year on Delbert McClinton's very popular annual jam band cruise. Jay Curlee, who produced the video documentary "Rock The Boat" which was filmed on Delbert's cruise three or four years ago, made a comment about the women loving Raul's deep sexy voice. Jay, by the way, had never heard Taylor, but checked him out on the recommendation of a Soul Patroller, (who is also a McClinton fan) and liked what he heard and saw very much. (And that is a powerful compliment in the world of jam bands.)
So, there you go! If it wasn't for Taylor Hicks, I surely would never have heard of Raul Malo, and I most certainly would never have come across the name Jay Curlee. (And I surely would not be the owner of his documentary.) Ah, the ever-growing perks of being a Soul Patroller!
GREAT topic Aragall As with Azure, I've been introduced to many new artists through Taylor, whether from him or from his fans. One that comes to mind immediately is Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, introduced to me by our wonderful DJ Hottay at Little Buddy Radio. By the way, she has been running a wonderful show on her Internet radio station every Friday night from 11pm Eastern till 1am called "Jump, Jive, and Jazz"...absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend tuning in, as my husband and I try to do every Friday night: http://www.littlebuddyradio.com/

Went looking for Jerry Lee Lewis on Youtube after the Captol Fourth. Taylor was amazing and loved his performance. Came across this really cool video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_k-CL3dJ8k
Taylor loves Ray Charles - who is jamming with Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis -
JLL had a couple of songs written for him by Kris Kristofferson, who also attended the ceremonies when Taylor accepted his award at the Alabama Hall of Fame back in February.
I'm more in tune to the history side of an artist now that I've followed Taylor. He keeps great company
Aragall, she opened for Taylor at Foxwoods, that's where I first heard her. She's pretty amazing isn't she ? She's quite popular now and it's pretty easy to see why. Great topic by the way !
azure...You are spot on when you say our eyes and ears have been opened because of Taylor. There's such a vast world of music that I would have missed, plus I've met some of the most fabulous people ( hello azure ) because of Taylor !
BroadwayStar......I've never been so fascinated with the historical side of music as I am now! I used to pretty much pop in a tune and go onto the next never thinking about what it took to write and record the song !
I'll never forget the night Taylor sang Trouble. What an amazing song! After the show, I went straight to Google. I had to find out about this LaMontagne dude. Never heard of him. Now he's way, way at the top of my list of favorites.

Love both of those Aragall! I remember when I first heard RLM's "Crazy" it just stopped me in my tracks....WHO is doing this???? While I enjoy the original, this cover just absolutely blew me away

Same here, sunny. I loved the Gnarles Barkley version. When I first heard Ray do this song, it knocked me out. Same song, but an entirely different feel and emotion.
I found out just 2 days ahead of time that Ray was appearing live in my old stomping grounds, Chapel Hill, NC right around Christmas last year. I almost went, but with such short notice and the holidays, I passed it up. I wish he'd do a concert around here again.....and soon.

I wrote you a long.....LONG post last night about Raul Malo. Just as I was about to finish it, the power flicked off, and I lost it.
Thank you for bringing him (and the Mavericks) up. I had never heard of them and I LOVE what I've seen and heard on youtube.
I'm going to post 2 videos (admin must hate me!). I'm not sure if he's in the first one, but I love the song. It's definitely him in the second. And how cool that the second clip is from a show in London!
The Mavericks
Hey, Good Lookin' (Can't go wrong with Hank!!)
Ooooops! Can't embed the video, but the link to youtube works, and it's worth the listen!!
I listened to most of the two Malo clips, plus part of a third. This is exactly the kind of singing I hate. He sings right off the sheet music, plodding along, every downbeat syllable falling squarely on the beat.
To regain my sanity, I turned on the tv and watched Taylor's "Dancing in the Dark", quite a few times. Why does it seem to rock better than The Boss'? Haven't figured that one out yet.
The essence of singing is in the phrasing, and nobody does it better than Taylor. Notice how he syncopates the line "Man, I'm just tired and bored with myself". He likes it so much, he repeats it in the second (actually the third) verse, inserting "sick" in the middle. Or, he may have gotten mixed up, but it doesn't matter. I'm sure that he enjoys his skill in this advanced aspect of the art of singing...who wouldn't? Herein lies a clue as to why he wants to Act. In the right role, he would kill.

thanks for the positive comments, I love reading your posts.
Taylor has the gift of song interpretation. Taylor takes a song, breaks it apart and puts it back together with his stamp on it. It has to do with the way he emotes the song.

just how some of us feel.
I agree. I also think that's part of the reason that Taylor never sings the same song the same way twice. He goes with his feelings and his interpretation as he sings. I enjoy listening to him sing the same song but on different occasions, they are all different. I'm mesmerized by this ability to emote such emotion and feeling.
Weird, I'm getting an "Internal Server Error" when I try to Quote, though Reply seems to work fine
Ray, BBS is right IMO, and one amazing thing about Taylor too is though he puts a song back together in his own style, he STILL seems to never perform a song the same way twice. I think he gets a lot of joy out of experimenting with different feels and ways of putting it all together. Also I believe he interacts well with the band behind him, which may cause some of the change-up as well.
Thanks for the nice comment, greatly appreciated

Actually, I think Taylor would be the first to admit that he screwed up Dancing in the Dark, big-time. Many people think he even dropped the F-word in there. (I don't know, I only saw it once and didn't tape it.) I don't see anything wrong with being truthful, and I doubt Taylor would either.

I read that rumor somewhere too, but I did listen to it, and NO, he didn't say the f word.
I've watched that performance about 20 times now, and I'm sure he did say it, BBS. It's kind of like what the poster Ray was talking abut a few posts up, how Taylor takes a song and pulls it apart and puts it back together again. That's kind of what he did, only when he put it back together, he changed a few of the words to what he thought they should have been. He's a much better song writer than the Boss anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't contact Taylor and see if he can borrow his new version of it.
whatever, I've listened to it, my son, and hubby, have listened to it. there is no f word in there.
BBS, I didn't hear it either, and I agree it was never said. Care for a Taylenol? Actuallly, I can think of all kinds of scenarios to use that word now, but I won't.
I don't have a DVR, but the version I wached on the tube sure did have it there, or at least that's how it sounded. A lot of others heard it also, so it couldn't have just been me.
Anyway, to answer this threads question, I'd have to say Fats Domino.
Whether he said it or not, my point is that people have different opinions about it, and also about whether or not he gave a poor performance with Dancing in the Dark. I think Taylor would enjoy reading everyone's opinion, not just those that take a 'he-can-do-no-wrong' attitude. I'm sure he's smart enough to know that those people are not the ones to turn to when he wants sincere criticism.

weather or not he said the f word is not an opinion. he either said it or he didn't. If someone is constantly finding the negative, why would they be here?

LOL, that's too funny. I guess it's the soul-connection we all have. At least we are in total agreement.

I actually believe that Taylor if he wanted to ,has the ability to put on a whole show totally unscripted He is that much of a showman.I've never known him to sing a song the same way twice,an example would be his incredible versions of The Maze,Compared To What and Hollywood Nights, just to name a few. If you listen to each one from different shows you are able to hear the changes.I don't believe this to be a common practice among many artists, most want to stay in the safe zone and do it the same each time, not Taylor .That's one of the things I admire the most about him,he's fearless in his approach to music, taking it to the limits with every performance.
He goes with what he feels 'in the moment'. That's why his performance of any song is never the same. He is spontanious. Exciting.
A story Ona (the man T is friends with that opens the bar in Bham T used to play at a lot) has told this story of Taylor before AI. He was playing there and it was storming like crazy outside. Tornado warnings and all. In mid song, Taylor ran out of the bar, mic in hand still singing, in to the storm and ended up on the corner by Pizza Hut....still singing!! You could still hear him inside the bar. LOL! Ona ran out, asked him what the hell he was doing, and Taylor said "you know how it is when the spirit hits ya." Ona ordered him back inside. LOL!
I love that story because it shows how spontanious Taylor is. How he goes with the moment. Where the spirit moves him. That is such a gift and I'm happy Taylor uses that gift....along with the gift that is voice.

I had not heard that story, it's so Taylor! I love it, do you have others that you can share?
Michael Warren is another favorite of mine. His song LIE TO ME ....I play it all the time. If I were a singer, I would beg him to let me record it. I found a very short video of him singing this song. The sound isn't great either, but.....

The artists that I have found because of Taylor are Otis Rettig, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge, Mavis Staples. I never really listened to that style of music before Taylor. It was because of him that I started to explore other kinds of music. Before Taylor I was listening mostly to classic rock which I still love. He made me realize how much I love blues music and also has gotten me to open my mind and explore other artists as well.
