Trolls aside, if it weren't for American Idol fans, I think the show would have been in trouble long ago. The initial excitement following the TV show faded a bit. Bringing in Taylor and now, Ace, has injected some new life into the show. I'm not diminishing the talents of anyone in the show. The fact is that you need a big name to draw in the general public. I don't know that Ace is that big, but he does have some recognition. And for me it's Christmas every day to see his face up there in Times Square! BUT - let's be thankful for the tickets being sold!! In these times, it's a miracle there is a line at TKTS every day!

When was Taylor with the show? If you look at the Grosses for Grease http://www.broadwayworld.com/grossesshow.cfm?show=GREASE&year=2007, you will see that for all of 2007 Grease was only at 80% one week (and never lower) and most other weeks it was well over 90% sold. This trend continued in the first half of 2008, before Taylor joined the show-there was only one week it was below 70% and most weeks it was well over 90%. I'm glad that Taylor joined Grease and that a lot of his fans got to see him, but the numbers were really strong before he joined the cast this summer. Take a moment to look at the grosses because I think the numbers are pretty impressive. Times are a little tough right now and that is definitely going to effect ticket sales. I've heard excellent things about Ace, yet ticket sales are still down.
Thanks for the info about the previous sales. Being an Idol fan, I've read a lot of the boards, and I've seen so many posts where fans of Taylor were giving him the credit for the shows entire sales, which we all know isn't the case at all. No one person was responsible for them, and as you pointed out, the sales were already strong, before he joined. I think it's a combination of the entire cast, and the show itself that deserves the credit for the strong sales. And I'm not trying to say anything negative about Taylor, like some of his fans will probably come and say, but that's one thing that bothers me is when credit for the entire shows grosses are given to one person.
I don't know where you're reading that Taylor's fans are giving him all the credit for Grease's entire sales. There was an article on Broadway World STATING what Taylor brought in. Taylor fans on HIS sites certainly DO NOT think he is the only one responsible for the show's success. Plenty of his fans on the different sites have given credit to the rest of the cast and have said MANY complimentary things about different members of the cast.
Perhaps you're thinking about these two articles:
"Grease" - which vaulted right over the critics to box office glory. It's playing to sold-out houses and is grossing nearly $800,000 a week. It got a little lift from the Tonys, but its real draw this summer is "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks, who's playing Teen Angel. An insider says Hicks is worth at least $150,000 in extra ticket sales a week.
Grease is getting more than a second wind on Broadway. The satisfying revival of the popular musical just got two new leads in the production, Ashley Spencer and Derek Keeling, both came from the television casting show Youre The One That I Want but were runners-up. Even better for the show is that the New York Posts Michael Riedel (who else?) reports that the arrival of Taylor Hicks on Broadway has been a huge bonus at the box-office, Riedels source estimates hes worth at least an additional $150,000 a week in ticket sales.
For me I would say yes. It started when Max and Laura left and I don't mean that with any disrespect for the rest of the cast. IMO, I watched the show GYTOTIW and I was invested in the outcome. I voted for Max and Laura and was thrilled that they won. I participated in the forum because I learned from the people on the board. I learned about broadway, about show business and about raising children who want to be on broadway. I learned from those parents and subject matter experts in the industry. I appreciated the forum for that reason, being a parent of children who want to be a Max and Laura someday. The knowledge that I gained was so helpful. It inspired my children and brought us all to NYC last summer to see Max and Laura. We LOVED grease and all the actors in it, we saw it twice!
I truely believe the show was a great marketing strategy that pulled people to broadway who may have never gone otherwise. I hope that broadway will accept this method and we'll see more shows like it in the future.
Now with all the changes of cast it's hard to keep the same passion on the board. I think it's just the natural cycle of change which is inevitable. Nothing stays the same forever, which is a good thing really. It's not good or bad that there are different actors, it's just not the same. Some people will like it others won't and that's ok. I'm just feeling a bit sad because the original cast is gone. Not just Sandy and Danny but other originals have moved on. To me Sandy and Danny will always be Laura and Max. That's no disrespect for Ashley and Derek, it's just the way I see it. We all have our opinions.
Hi Judy, I just wanted to say that I love American Idol and I don't consider myself a freak. You just have to take what Mr. E. says with a grain of salt. He may be a little crochety at times but he keeps a little spark going. I really enjoyed the last season of American Idol because there were so many truly talented people showcased. I loved David Cook and David Archueleta. I am looking forward to seeing what they have to offer this season. I think it's really great that some people who otherwise might have spent a lot of years in obscurity had the chance to be seen. I also like America's Got Talent. The winner of that show was also extremely gifted. We have been given some true gifts because of competitions like this. Sure the early shows have a lot of bizzare characters but as the season goes on the truly talented are revealed as the rest fall away. Just think maybe we wouldn't have had the privilege of enjoying people like Taylor, Max and Laura for many years yet if it weren't for these kinds of shows. Like I said I love it
reniefran.........I'll have to keep that in mind next time Mr.E gets a bit crochety LOL There have been some really talented people who have come from these shows. The mere fact that they can beat the odds is so exciting.
It sure is. I am still waiting for the auditions for AI to start. They are really a hoot! I wish they had a show like that for old folks like me. It might be fun to at least audition. Has Simon mellowed or is it just me? It seems like Randy has taken up where he left off. And Paula God bless her has such a kind heart she has a hard time telling people when they truly don't have talent. Oh well it's fun! Have a great day!

I think Simon has mellowed somewhat,he seems a little kinder than he was This year they've added a fourth judge,so it should be interesting. Hope your day is great too !
henrysmom.........I usually start watching after they've chosen the top 24.My husband loves the auditions. After they're over he usually stops watching LOL !
I really like this board.I came on here at first to find out more about the Grease show after it was announced Taylor would be in it.I wanted to see what those of you who had seen the show had to say about it.I didn't think I would like it at first, but I was wrong.I wound up loving it!I will say that if Taylor wasn't in it,I would haver never seen it,especially 8 times.
I was also interested in Ace's performances.I never seen him act,but I did get to meet him after one of Taylor's shows. He couldn't have been any nicer.
To me as far as the show is concerned,it don't make any sence to argure who is responsible for the most ticket sales.Everybody from Taylor and Ace to the understudies have played a role in the shows success. In the end,it don't matter as long as butts are in the seats.
Hmm sounds interesting,Judy. Do you know who the fourth judge will be? The auditions are the most entertaining part. It's amazing how many people think that they are talented and the people making the calls let them through. I read somewhere that they do it on purpose because it makes good television.
Henry's mom, who is Henry? I don't mean to sound dense but I don't know.

The new judge is singer songwriter Kara DioGuardi, reniefran. She has strong ties to the behind the scenes world of Idol, writing tracks for David Cook,David Archuleta,Carrie Underwood,Clay Aiken,Bo Bice Taylor Hicks and Katherine MPhee She's also writen songs for The Jonas Brothers,Britney Spears,Gwen Stefanin,Christina Aguilera,Santana Celine Dione,Faith Hill,Leona Lewis and just about any other artist who's cracked Billboards Top 10 in recent years.I guess she knows her stuff !
I don`t think this board has run it's life... Sure I am a big fan of Max and Laura... but I also like Ashley, I think she is really talented... but as the board name mention it is a Grease board and I love Grease both the movie and the musical. We all have our favorites but that dosen`t mean we can not appraciate the other cast member... and who knows maybe we end up having a great surprise.
thanks, You must be quite busy. I know that my seven year old nephew was quite the handful at that age. He has a new puppy and he is so cute with her. He is the baby of the family so he gets a lot of attention. He is a sweet natured child but he is all boy too. Not being a parent I enjoy seeing my nieces and nephews grow and mature it's great fun. We'll all be together for Christmas and I can't wait!
Didn't know where to put this so here we go. Has anyone seen Billy Elliot ? I am reading rave reviews about it. Elton John wrote the music and the critics are calling it stunning.
I haven't but if you check on BroadwayWorld there are a few threads about it?
Thanks henrysmom,I'll check it out. I've always loved Elton's music he's incredibly talented.Loved Lion King ,I bought it for my grandkids and ended up listening to it more than them LOL
